BAFTA Awards: Hot Stuff And Hot Messes Across The Pond

The fact that the British Film and Television Awards took place on the same day as the Grammys probably only annoys folks like us, who would really like to be giving both events our full attention. And so it goes that we basically ignored the U.K.’s Oscars, missing adorable speeches from The Artist’s Jean Dujardin and Michel Hazanavicius (whose Best Actor and Best Director wins were two of seven awards for the film), and not catching that cute moment in which Best Actress winner Meryl Streep lost her shoe climbing the stairs to the stage and Colin Firth ran to get it for her and place it on her feet. Until now, of course. On the red carpet, there were a handful of A-listers, a few Mad Men and Downton Abbey faves, and a lot of Brits that haven’t fully crossed over to the states yet. To our slight disappointment, there weren’t too many total fashion fails, but we managed to find a few (Oh, Christina Hendricks, why must you do that to your body?). Mostly, though, we saw some sexy strutting from the likes of Viola Davis, Christina Ricci and Brad Pitt. See for yourself who was hot, and who was just a hot mess, in the gallery below.

SAG Awards: 10 Do’s And Don’ts Of Neutrals And Grays

If anyone but Meryl Streep had shown up for an awards show in which she’s nominated for The Iron Lady in an iron-colored outfit — well, we would have said something meaner than that it’s a silly pun. But maybe she didn’t intend it as such, and she did look elegant as hell in her Vivienne Westwood onstage at the SAG Awards. And she was among many who chose shades of gray and neutral and cream on Sunday night. Zoe Saldana, Modern Family’s Ariel Winter and Glee’s Naya Rivera chose sparkly numbers that grabbed our attention. Others, like Kristen Wiig and Octavia Spencer, didn’t look bad but seemed less vibrant than their usual selves without color to match their personalities. Michael Fassbender’s On-Camera Pee, And Other Oscar Roundtable Moments

Whether they’re peeing in front of a camera, talking about their bat nipples or discussing people slicing off their toes, celebrities truly are just like us. And by us, we mean giant weirdos. When Newsweek assembled George Clooney, Tilda Swinton, Viola Davis, Charlize Theron, Christopher Plummer and Michael Fassbender for their Oscar roundtable, plenty of creepy stories and awkward moments started to emerge. “I did actually pee on-camera, ” Fassbender admits about his starring role in Shame, explaining that he got it done in three takes. “Hard to stop, isn’t it?” Clooney blurts gleefully. Other delightfully off-putting moments that cropped up during the stars’ discussion included:

Clooney’s depressing shoe salesman years. “There was a whole generation of women who had a toe cut off to fit in tight pumps,” he…jokes?
Charlize Theron commanding that Viola Davis recognize, “You’re hot as sh–!”
Clooney’s defense of the Batman sequels, which gets derailed by Tilda Swinton’s memory of his prominent rubber batsuit nipples. “Had I known they were going to put nipples on the thing, I would have rethought it,” George sighs.
Christopher Plummer’s very real beef with Tree of Life director Terrence Malick, saying of his experience making Malick’s film The New World, “I gave him sh–. I’ll never work with him again.”

So … can we give all of them an Oscar for all this riffing? Or just to Tilda Swinton for uttering the phrase, “There are laws about erections now, aren’t there?” We don’t need all those short film Oscars. Just swap one of them out and no one will be the wiser.

Critics’ Choice Movie Awards Red Carpet 12 Best-Dressed

Oh, yeah, people. After yesterday’s PCA dress rehearsal, awards season 2012 got really fired up at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards tonight. Our appetites for sequins and lace and tuxes are whetted. We are ready to spend the next month debating whether blue is the new black, whether the mullet dress should go the way of the mullet, and whether men can make it onto the best-dressed list without looking absolutely silly (we’re talking to you, Christopher Plummer).

So, now that we’ve gushed over little sisters Elle Fanning and Elizabeth Olsen, and we’ve been pondering the fact that all those gothic ladies were wearing romantic black at 3 in the afternoon, it’s time to commit to a best-dressed list. From the adorable Thomas Horn and Berenice Bejo to the deliciously elegant Charlize Theron, Michelle Williams and Sir Ben Kingsley, to Brad Pitt and h here are our 12 favorites from the evening. Stars Nominate Charlize Theron, J.Lo, Tilda Swinton For Best-Dressed Of 2011

Are you having trouble deciding who among our list of 30 lovely ladies was the best-dressed celebrity of 2011? You’re not alone. We posed that question to a number of other famous folks on red carpets and in the VH1 offices, and many were stumped. But when they did finally answer, they gave us a few names that didn’t make our original list — and now we realize it easily could have been a top 50. Watch on:

“I always think Charlize looks amazing,” Aisha Tyler told us.

Questlove put his choice in context: “The best-dressed celeb of 2011 was J.Lo, considering the tragedy she went through this year. I feel like she’s put on a brave face and she came out smelling like a rose.”

There was a bit of nepotism at play too: “My wife, Paula Patton,” Robin Thicke declared, and Bill Hader nominated his SNL co-star Kristen Wiig.

2012 Golden Globe Nominees’ Least Award-Worthy Moments: Mickey Mouse Club To She-Devil

As soon as the 69th annual Golden Globe nominations were announced this morning, industry folks like Variety began noting how many movie stars (as opposed to fancy ahctorrrs, we guess) are nominated: George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Ryan Gosling aren’t exactly slouches in the acting department, but they don’t turn their noses down at a good romantic comedy heist film either. On the other hand, the more we think about it, the more we think maybe they should have turned down a few gigs. Well, no regrets, Meryl and Glenn and Leo. You turned out OK. Just forgive us for laughing with you at some of the skeletons in your closet/IMDb page!

The Help, The Artist Top SAG Noms – But Stunt Cast Honors Are Way Cooler

The Descendants, The Artist and The Help seem to be three of the biggest films so far in the 2012 awards season race. But the Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations were announced this morning, and The Help and The Artist were leading the nods with three apiece, while the George Clooney flick picked up only two. In the hottest contest, for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture, The Artist and The Descendants are up against Bridesmaids and Midnight in Paris. The actor category recognized Clooney, The Artist’s Jean Dujardin, Brad Pitt for Moneyball, Leonardo DiCaprio for J. Edgar and A Better Life star Demian Bichir. The lead actress contenders are Glenn Close for Albert Nobbs, as well as the same four ladies that have been nominated all season long already: Viola Davis for The Help, Meryl Streep for The Iron Lady, Tilda Swinton for We Need to Talk About Kevin and Michelle Williams for My Week With Marylin. The supporting actor and actress categories also closely resemble every other kudosfest so far (though, sorry, Drive fans, Albert Brooks was left out of this one).

There are plenty of familiar faces in the TV categories too — Boardwalk Empire, Breaking Bad, Dexter and The Good Wife are up against newcomer Game of Thrones. (Good thing there’s no “you win or you die” rule here.)

The most exciting nominations to us? The stunt ensembles! The Adjustment Bureau, Cowboys & Aliens, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, Transformers: Dark of the Moon and X-Men: First Class are the movie casts up for the prize. And the Dexter, Game of Thrones, Southland, Spartacus: Gods of the Arena and True Blood ensembles compete in the TV category. Wait, can that one be an arena battle, instead of a vote? Pretty please?

Tree Of Life, Bridesmaids, The Descendants Among Weekend’s Top Award Winners

While Hollywood accountants were having heart attacks over the worst box office weekend in years, movie critics all over the country were doing their best to make sure the year’s best films get their due — if not in cash, then at least with a little extra buzz leading up to the Oscars. The American Film Institute, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, the New York Film Critics Online, the Boston Society of Film Critics and the San Francisco Film Critics Circle made their picks, adding to what we’ve already heard from the National Board of Review, the New York Film Critics Circle and the Independent Spirit Awards nominations. Here’s whose looking good so far:

Tree of Life, which was tailor-made for critics and film geeks, was named a top 10 film by AFI and the NYFCO; star Jessica Chastain was named Breakthrough Performer by the latter and Best Supporting Actress by the LAFCA (for Tree and five other films); NYCFO, LAFCA and SFFCC all named Terrence Malick Best Director; and cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki earned Best Cinematography from those three and the BSFC.

Bridesmaids, which isn’t likely to earn any Oscar nods but will probably earn a few Golden Globe nominations, was named an AFI top 10 (Melissa McCarthy and the whole ensemble cast were also recognized by the NYCFO and the BSFC).
