Young Adult Authors Shouldn’t Take Young Adult Personally, Says Diablo Cody

When the first images from Young Adult surfaced on the Web earlier this year, showing Charlize Theron looking bedraggled in her sweats and Mickey Mouse shirt, clutching a Pomeranian in a carrier and a Victoria’s Secret bag, several young adult authors I know took to Twitter immediately. They seemed torn between being excited about the existence of a movie about their profession, especially one written by Diablo Cody and directed by Jason Reitman, and slightly horrified by the idea of being depicted as ladies who can’t be bothered to brush their hair and put on a decent pair of pants before leaving the house. And then when they learned Charlize’s character, Mavis Gary, is kind of a crazy stalker who can’t let go of her high school years, they were a bit worried.

“I watched [the trailer], and I was like, ‘Oh, this is going to give my profession a bad name!” Mortal Instruments series author Cassandra Clare told TheFABlife last week. At the same time, she added, “I really want to see it, because when will there be another movie about a young adult author?”

But Cody, who calls herself “the Sweet Valley superfan of all time” and is writing an upcoming adaptation of Sweet Valley High, is pretty sure there won’t be a huge outcry from the YA author community. “Mavis is one of a kind. I don’t think it’s an indictment of young adult authors as a group. It’s just this one lady is a little bit off-kilter,” she assured us at the movie’s New York premiere. And though she previously only knew Sweet Valley creator Francine Pascal, “since this movie has been screening, I have met some [YA authors] that have come out of the woodwork, and they are all into the movie, so I’m glad.”

Breaking Dawn Superfan Week: Letters To Twilight’s Love Is Real, Not Blind

For those of you unfamiliar with the last-but-not-least subjects of our Breaking Dawn Superfan Week, the ladies behind Letters to Twilight are not your typical gushing fangirls. Their daily letters are funny, sarcastic and never shy to point out the, well, problematic aspects of the franchise. But their true love of the saga still shines through. Let’s let them tell you about it.

Nikki and Bekah: We started LTT (Letters to Twilight) in 2008, after realizing we obsessively watched the same behind-the-scenes, one-hour Vanity Fair photo-shoot video of the cast and couldn’t understand why we, as educated, professional young 20-somethings would waste our time. And then we found fan videos. And Twilight tattoos. And discovered that we felt “second-hand embarrassed” about how Twilight fans were portrayed, and knew that if we were “normal,” there had to be other normal Twilight fans out there too. If you find any let us know. Three years later, LTT is a place for Twilight fans who don’t know why they like teen vampires and wolves. We don’t take ourselves, Twilight, the movies or the cast seriously. And we laugh. A lot!

TheFABlife: When did you first fall in love with Twilight?
Bekah: The moment I saw Rob Pattinson walk on the screen. I mean, in 2008, when I devoured the books on vacation while sitting on the beach.
Nikki: When Robert Pattinson’s eyes caught mine from the screen and looked directly into my soul, I knew it was true love. (Actually, the week before the Twilight movie came out I read the books and was unconditionally and irrevocably changed.)

TFL: What’s the moment you can’t wait to see in Breaking Dawn (1 or 2)?
Nikki: I can’t wait to see how they plan to chew the Demon Baby out of Bella.
Bekah: Sex. I mean, the wedding.

TFL: How many times have you read the books? How many times have you seen the previous movies?
Bekah: You should really be asking how many copies of the books I’ve had to buy because my previous copies were so worn.
Nikki: We’ve seen the movies so many times that we think they’re gonna offer us stock in AMC Theaters next.

TFL: How many times do you plan on seeing Breaking Dawn Part 1?
Bekah: We actually just saw it at the premiere and have tickets to a screening Wednesday, midnight tickets with pals on Thursday, and I just planned to see it with some friends next weekend at a “normal” time! So maybe 1 million?

TFL: What will you do after you’ve seen it that many times?
Nikki: We’ll probably get an invite to Clay the movie theater usher’s high school graduation party.

Breaking Dawn Superfan Week: How @RKDaily Overcame An Aversion To Vampires

As we wind down Breaking Dawn Superfan Week, today’s featured guest is surprisingly not a blogger, not in the traditional sense anyway. “Rivers” sticks to the microblog, tweeting and retweeting massive amounts of Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart news @RKdaily. But brief is not the nature of Rivers’ love for the franchise that launched Robsten. See for yourself.

TheFABlife: When did you first fall in love with Twilight?
Rivers: In 2008, I kept seeing the Twilight book cover in stores. I asked my friend about it and the second “vampires” came out of her mouth, I pretty much tuned her out. She reassured me with, “It’s about vampires but it’s not really about vampires,” which I found is ironically, very true. I fell in love with the books, and when the first Twilight movie was released a few months later, I couldn’t wait for the sequel to start filming.

TFL: What’s the moment you can’t wait to see in Breaking Dawn (1 or 2)?
Rivers: I’m not big into automobiles, but I would love to see the quirky scenes of Bella trying to get around in ridiculous missile-proof cars in the beginning of Breaking Dawn. For Breaking Dawn Part 1, I don’t think I’m alone when I say the honeymoon scene. You have two characters that have overcome so much together, yet haven’t been able to share this aspect of their relationship, until now. For Breaking Dawn Part 2, I’m all about seeing how Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson portray their characters as new parents.

TFL: How many times have you read the books? How many times have you seen the previous movie?
Rivers: I’ve read the series two or three times, with the exception of the monster that is Breaking Dawn (which I’ve fully read once, and skimmed through a second time). If I remember correctly, I saw Twilight in theaters at least five times, New Moon three times and Eclipse twice. I’ve never been more grateful to live near a cheaply priced theater. Like the rest of my favorite movies, I’ll put the DVD on in the background while I’m doing something else. However, I can say that it’s been a while since I’ve watched Twilight and Eclipse DVDs without the actors’ hysterical commentary. They. Are. Golden.

TFL: How many times do you plan on seeing Breaking Dawn Part 1?
Rivers: For now, I just have plans for one showing. If I go more will depend on if I can stomach the *spoiler* birth scene and *not a spoiler* the wigs. Who am I kidding? I’ll see it again.

Breaking Dawn Superfan Week: Twilight Lexicon’s Founder Defines Fandom

We’re halfway through our Breaking Dawn Superfan Week, and we thought it was about time to give a nod (or maybe bow down) to one of the sites that started it all, Twilight Lexicon. Lori Joffs started the Lex long before most of the world had even heard of Edward and Bella, and all these years later, it’s still the ultimate resource for info on the books, mythology, movies and Stephenie Meyer. Lori (a.k.a. Alphie) looked back at how it all began for her, and what the future beyond Twilight looks like for her.

TheFABlife: When did you first fall in love with Twilight?
Lori Joffs: I read Twilight in January of 2006. It took me a few chapters to get into, but by the end I was fascinated by this impossible romance of a vampire who loved this girl for her humanity and a human who loved the supernatural qualities of this vampire. I wondered how they could ever make it work when she would obviously have to become a vampire in order for them to be together, and thus lose her humanity, which was a huge factor for the vampire. It was a conundrum that played on my brain enough to send me looking on the Internet for more people to talk to about it.

TFL: What’s the moment you can’t wait to see in Breaking Dawn (1 or 2)?
LJ: There are so many! But I think the one that will be the most fascinating is the birth. We’ve been talking about that scene since they started filming Twilight. How can they do it, keep it just as gory and as frightening, and yet stay PG-13? I’m sure it will be just amazing!

TFL: How many times have you read the books? How many times seen the previous movie?
LJ: I haven’t any clue how many times I’ve read the books! Cover to cover, I’ve read them all at least twice. I’ve read Twilight and Eclipse more than New Moon and Breaking Dawn, though. I believe I’ve read Eclipse about a dozen times. However, I’ve read segments over and over again from all the books.

TFL: How many times do you plan on seeing Breaking Dawn Part 1?
LJ: I know I will see it at least three times in the theater because I have plans for three times. I might see it more than that, but we’ll have to see!

TFL: What will you do after you’ve seen it that many times?
LJ: Start planning for the next film, I suppose! And update the website with actor info and images.

TFL: What will you do after the final movie is out?
LJ: I’ve very excited for The Host as a movie. VERY excited. I might get bashed for saying it, but I’d take Ian O’Shea over Edward Cullen any day of the week! As much as I fell for Edward in the books, I fell even harder for Ian! So I’ll probably start focusing on that project. We’ve already started working on TheHostLexicon.com even.

The Host: Casting That Other Stephenie Meyer Love Triangle

There’s only a little over a year left before the last Twilight movie, Breaking Dawn – Part 2, hits theaters, and fans aren’t the only ones worried about what will fill that void in their lives. Those of us whose livelihoods rely on fan enthusiasm (being completely honest here!) are a little concerned too! But that’s not the only reason why we’re excited to learn about progress in the adaptation of Stephenie Meyer‘s alien survival drama The Host.

According to Variety, they’ve narrowed down the choices for the two male leads to play opposite Saoirse Ronan. Saoirse will play Melanie, whose body, like almost every other member of the human race, has been invaded by an intelligent, parasitic alien species. After being on the run from the invasion for so long, Melanie is somehow strong enough to remain partially conscious while the alien in her body, Wanderer, tries to take over. And with Wanderer she manages to run away and find the underground hideout where Melanie’s uncle, boyfriend, brother and others have been living. She’s not exactly received with open arms, but while fighting for survival she also winds up in one of the most intriguing love triangles we’ve ever read. That appears to be Stephenie’s specialty, doesn’t it?

In the running to play Melanie’s boyfriend Jared are Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games), Kit Harington (Game of Thrones), Jai Courtney (One Shot) and Max Irons (Red Riding Hood). And testing for the role of Ian, who falls in love with Wanderer, are Dane DeHaan (In Treatment), Thomas McDonnell (Prom, that’s him pictured on the right, btw), Augustus Prew (The Borgias) and Jake Abel (Ronan’s Lovely Bones co-star).

While we wait for In Time writer/director Andrew Niccol to make up his mind, we’ll be over at Hollywood Crush voting for our picks for the roles.

The Twilight Cast: 25 Pics Of The Way They Were

Memoriesssss…like the corners of my mind…No, our eyes aren’t watery – we are straight up CRYING today, because the shooting of Breaking Dawn is officially over. You know what that means, right? No more Twilight movies in production! Ever! Guises…it’s OVER. Okay, so maybe it’s more like the beginning of the end, but we’re still feeling emotional and nostalgic. Some memories we’ve reflected on today as we’ve looked back on three magical years together:

Whedon Says Angel Would Kick Edward’s Butt

We admit that, while some of our friends and colleagues are rabid Twilight and True Blood fans, we will always be, first and foremost, Buffy and Angel devotees (from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, natch). We love a good vampire tale, but more than that we love the worlds Joss Whedon created, and we’ve been wondering what Whedon’s take on the whole Twilight thing is. Well, now we know what he really thinks, thanks to a recent interview in which Whedon claimed that if Angel (neé evil altar ego Angelus, neé Liam) and Edward Cullen ever got in a row, Angel would beat Edward’s ass. (Team. . .Angel?)

Says Whedon, “I think Robert Pattinson‘s really cool, [but] Angel would kick the sh*t out of him. Okay, he’s Angelus. There’s no Edward Cullenus, okay. He just gets shiny in the sun… [Angel star David] Boreanaz would have him down in a heartbeat. No offense, ’cause he’s hot.”

Whedon doesn’t totally hate on the Twilight series though – just like the ill-fated love affair between Buffy and Angel, Whedon thinks there’s something special about Edward and Bella’s chaste romance. “There’s something primal about that story,” he says. “You can’t get away from it, and it just works like gangbusters.
