Meg Ryan Through The Years — Happy 50th Birthday!

Today marks the 50th birthday of Meg Ryan, the original America’s sweetheart and queen of romantic comedies. Meg’s breakout role in When Harry Met Sally skyrocketed her to superstardom, and we all wanted to “have what she’s having.” She then went on to star in some of the best romantic comedies of our time, including Sleepless in Seattle, City of Angels and You’ve Got Mail.

Meg seems to have given up on the rom-coms these days, focusing on more serious roles at the moment. We have to wonder if that has to do with her attempts to reverse the signs of aging with some minor tweaks that led to major results. That’s why we like to think of her as the natural beauty she was, the one we still like to pair with a pint of Ben and Jerry’s. So we’ll settle on our couch and celebrate her milestone with a movie after looking at these 20 pictures of Meg Ryan through the years.

Mellencamp’s Ex, Elaine Irwin, Moving On With Russell Simmons

One thing’s for sure, celebrities certainly rebound quickly. John Mellencamp and Elaine Irwin announced their divorce in December but it only took Mellencamp a few days to debut his new love, Meg Ryan. Well, Irwin realized that two can play that game and recently headed out to a Valentine’s Day lunch to benefit the Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation with Russell Simmons, who runs the charity.

When we first read in Page Six that Irwin and Simmons were “inseparable” we were wary because, who knows? Maybe they has a lot of business to discuss at the lunch. “Inseparable” is one of those terms that’s so vague and never really confirms physical contact or romance. Judging from the photos of the event, however, we’d have to say that yes, they were inseparable and they are in fact an item. This is not how you pose when you’re “just friends.” Congrats to the new couple, we’re guessing you had a pretty good Valentine’s Day.

We always figured that most celebrities, save for the reality show types and the celebutante starlets, enjoy their privacy. That’s why it’s so hard to believe the report that Meg Ryan, who just revealed that she’s dating John Mellencamp weeks after he announced his separation from Elaine Irwin, is reveling in this new attention. A source told PopEater “Meg couldn’t be happier,” a friend of the actress tells me. “Not only has she got a great new guy, she’s back in the headlines. It’s not easy going from being one of the highest paid actresses in the world to an anonymous New Yorker. Meg’s loving all this attention again.”

We have to call bulls—t on this source. Ryan has famously tried to ignore the limelight of Hollywood, and has said in the past “You figure out a way to walk around and not be noticed.” That doesn’t really sound like someone who is psyched to have people gawk at her new relationship. Her last few movies might have flopped, but we doubt that she’s looking to use her personal life as the way to catapult her into our sights again. Now that everyone knows Meg Ryan and John Mellencamp are an item, there’s no reason for them to pretend otherwise. Taking a break from their usual grocery store trips together (aw), the 59-year-old rocker and his 49-year-old date passed paparazzi on the way to the Whitney Museum of Art yesterday, with the pair laughing—and still wearing their sunglasses—in the lobby. Judging from John’s touchy-feely body language, this is one pairing that won’t Swyllenhaal brief.

Report: Meg Ryan And John Mellencamp Are Dating

Looks like John Mellencamp and Meg Ryan aren’t “just friends” after all. People reports that the pair have been dating for almost two months, recently being spotted in Martha’s Vineyard and NYC. “She usually comes in by herself or with her daughter,” said a witness who spotted Ryan grocery shopping with Johnny Cougar. “I thought that was her husband because they seemed for comfortable and familiar with each other, just like an old married couple.”

Actually, Ryan hasn’t been tied down since splitting with Dennis Quaid in 2001, but John just split with wife Elaine Irwin Mellencamp after nearly 20 years of marriage. People’s sources claim that the Mellencamps were secretly separated for months before things got serious with Meg. We’re inclined to believe it, as it’s hard to imagine one would trade their banging hot model wife/mother-of-your-children for Meg Ryan in 2010. No, Meg Ryan is what you go for after you become a short, single 59-year-old with a pompadour.

Here’s one sex tape you couldn’t pay us to watch. John Mellencamp, who announced his split from model wife Elaine just before New Years’, has been spending time backstage with Meg Ryan on his recent tour. No one’s accusing them of being anything more than “friends” and Ryan is one of the actresses taking part in Ghost Brothers Of Darkling County, his long-planned musical with Stephen King (for real!). But with Meg and the Coug spotted walking arm-in-arm last October, one does have to wonder about the timing.

Ryan is no stranger to dramatic splits, notoriously running off with Russell Crowe—and ditching husband Dennis Quaid—in 2001. Neither side had any comment on Page Six‘s rumor-mongering, but it’s not like either’s publicist could just say “Ewwwww!!!!”

How do you follow the biggest, darkest superhero movie of all time? According to The Sun, you hire Eddie Murphy to play a robber who wears a green body tight and leaves clues telling authorities exactly where they can find and arrest him. Yes, you cast Norbit as The Riddler. Gritty!

It took less than a day for Hollywood and everyone else to go “oh, hell no!” to The Sun‘s claims. Rachel Weisz as Catwoman we can accept. She’s hot and she’s British—something director Chris Nolan and Batman Christian Bale will appreciate. But Shia LaBeouf as Robin? Is there no such thing as “too obvious?” Until California passes a proposition that Shit TheBeef must star in every potential Hollywood blockbuster, that’s one casting choice we refuse to accept.

Catwoman aside, we can think of five villains we’d rather see brought to the big screen than the iconic ones hinted at so far. Sure, they’re less famous than The Riddler or Mr. Freeze, but that just means Joel Schumacher hasn’t ruined them.
