BAFTA Awards: Hot Stuff And Hot Messes Across The Pond

The fact that the British Film and Television Awards took place on the same day as the Grammys probably only annoys folks like us, who would really like to be giving both events our full attention. And so it goes that we basically ignored the U.K.’s Oscars, missing adorable speeches from The Artist’s Jean Dujardin and Michel Hazanavicius (whose Best Actor and Best Director wins were two of seven awards for the film), and not catching that cute moment in which Best Actress winner Meryl Streep lost her shoe climbing the stairs to the stage and Colin Firth ran to get it for her and place it on her feet. Until now, of course. On the red carpet, there were a handful of A-listers, a few Mad Men and Downton Abbey faves, and a lot of Brits that haven’t fully crossed over to the states yet. To our slight disappointment, there weren’t too many total fashion fails, but we managed to find a few (Oh, Christina Hendricks, why must you do that to your body?). Mostly, though, we saw some sexy strutting from the likes of Viola Davis, Christina Ricci and Brad Pitt. See for yourself who was hot, and who was just a hot mess, in the gallery below.

SAG Awards: Ladies’ Night With The Help And Mo(o)re

Well, obvs, they hand out SAG Awards for both men and women — but with the big movie ensemble Actor going to the ladies of The Help, our memory of Sunday night’s ceremony might be skewed toward how much the ladies dominated the stage. This is, after all the organization that sticks to the old-school feminist “female actor” designation rather than “actress.” There was Mary Tyler Moore receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award, as we were reminded that people doubted there’d be an audience for a show about a single woman. Representing that other awesome female cast, Bridesmaids stars Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph and Melissa McCarthy livened up an otherwise too-sincere evening with their “Scorsese” drinking game (do they have to take a drink every time someone blogs his name, too?) And even the In Memoriam montage featured a great sendoff from Elizabeth Taylor, winking at us from beyond. It was enough to give pause to anyone who’s been rooting for The Descendants or The Artist to take home the big prizes come February 26 — do you really want to stop the momentum of all this amazing girl (lady) power? Do we want to be deprived of the sight of Octavia Spencer dancing around as Viola Davis makes us cry? Well, when the alternative is a good George Clooney speech or tricks by Uggie, that’s a tough question. Good thing we’re not voting on these things.

SAG Awards: 10 Do’s And Don’ts Of Neutrals And Grays

If anyone but Meryl Streep had shown up for an awards show in which she’s nominated for The Iron Lady in an iron-colored outfit — well, we would have said something meaner than that it’s a silly pun. But maybe she didn’t intend it as such, and she did look elegant as hell in her Vivienne Westwood onstage at the SAG Awards. And she was among many who chose shades of gray and neutral and cream on Sunday night. Zoe Saldana, Modern Family’s Ariel Winter and Glee’s Naya Rivera chose sparkly numbers that grabbed our attention. Others, like Kristen Wiig and Octavia Spencer, didn’t look bad but seemed less vibrant than their usual selves without color to match their personalities. Kristen Wiig Gets Darren Criss’ Awards Season Vote

Darren Criss’ new Broadway career is to blame for him missing last night’s People’s Choice Awards and won’t be at the Golden Globes this Sunday. But while he’s filling Daniel Radcliffe’s shoes in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, he’s also crossing his fingers for awards season wins for his co-stars on the big and small screens.

“Kristen Wiig is up for several awards and of course I’m rooting for her,” Criss told VH1 this week. The two recently starred together in the upcoming comedy Imogene, in which Criss plays a young Backstreet Boy impersonator who winds up in a relationship with Wiig’s character, a woman who’s been placed in her mother’s custody after faking a suicide attempt. Of course, it’s her previous down-and-out character in Bridesmaids that’s earning all the kudos this awards season: Bridesmaids won Favorite Comedy Movie at the PCAs, it’s up for Best Ensemble and Best Comedy at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards tonight, and she’s up for Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy at the Golden Globes, where the movie is again competing for Best Comedy.

“I’m a little biased, but she doesn’t need my good vibes! She did a killer job in Bridesmaids,” Criss noted. “I think it’s tough to be a funny Hollywood lady. It’s a tough business, it’s a man’s business, comedy. It can be kind of tough. She’s risen above the ranks of many. I wish nothing but the best for her.”

Of course, Glee is also nominated for Best Comedy Series at the Globes. But Criss isn’t too upset about missing the award show to perform as J. Pierrepont Finch on Broadway, calling it “a fine reason to not go to the Golden Globes. I’ll take that any day!”

Gillyyyyyy! While there’s no definitive word as to whether Kristen Wiig will stick around for another season of Saturday Night Live, Lorne Michaels‘s remarks last night at the second season premiere of Fred Armisen‘s Portlandia certainly left room for a question mark. You know, like the question mark you might put after the word “WHYYYYYYYYYY?”

When asked if the Bridesmaids star would return after this year, Lorne admits, “I really don’t know. We haven’t really talked about it. We still have 14 shows to do this season.” As for what the show will do without her, Michaels says, “I don’t know. I don’t know. I certainly don’t want her to leave.” Neither do we! Not so soon after she gave us flirting coach Rebecca LaRue! She has so much left to teach us!

Stars Nominate Charlize Theron, J.Lo, Tilda Swinton For Best-Dressed Of 2011

“I always think Charlize looks amazing,” Aisha Tyler told us.

Questlove put his choice in context: “The best-dressed celeb of 2011 was J.Lo, considering the tragedy she went through this year. I feel like she’s put on a brave face and she came out smelling like a rose.”

There was a bit of nepotism at play too: “My wife, Paula Patton,” Robin Thicke declared, and Bill Hader nominated his SNL co-star Kristen Wiig.

2012 Golden Globe Nominees’ Least Award-Worthy Moments: Mickey Mouse Club To She-Devil

As soon as the 69th annual Golden Globe nominations were announced this morning, industry folks like Variety began noting how many movie stars (as opposed to fancy ahctorrrs, we guess) are nominated: George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Ryan Gosling aren’t exactly slouches in the acting department, but they don’t turn their noses down at a good romantic comedy heist film either. On the other hand, the more we think about it, the more we think maybe they should have turned down a few gigs. Well, no regrets, Meryl and Glenn and Leo. You turned out OK. Just forgive us for laughing with you at some of the skeletons in your closet/IMDb page!

Golden Globe Noms Add Ryan Gosling, Jonah Hill, Rooney Mara To Awards Season Mix

That wacky Hollywood Foreign Press Association is at it again. The HFPA announced the nominees for the 69th Golden Globe Awards, and the list has a few surprises, and lots of things we actually like. The fact that the Globes separate drama movies from musicals and comedies always makes for a rather inclusive group of nominees. Previous 2012 awards season frontrunner The Artist tops the nominations here again with six, and The Help and The Descendants are tied in second place with five apiece.

George Clooney’s busy year has garnered him plenty of recognition here: He’s up for best drama actor for The Descendants, and for best director and best screenplay for The Ides of March. Both films are up against each other for best drama (up against The Help, Hugo, Moneyball and War Horse). In the lead drama acting categories, Ryan Gosling (for Ides) and Rooney Mara (The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) are the two newcomers. The supporting actor and actress categories also line up with the trends, with the exception of Jonah Hill (Moneyball) and Viggo Mortensen (A Dangerous Method). Seriously, for the others, look back at every other list we’ve published so far.

Bridesmaids, 50/50, The Artist, Midnight in Paris and My Week With Marilyn make up a very solid musical/comedy category. And we can’t even imagine how to place bets for the musical/comedy actresses: Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids) is the only actress on the list not to be an awards season regular. The musical/comedy actors are a more eclectic bunch: Ryan Gosling (for Crazy, Stupid, Love.), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (50/50), Brendan Gleason (The Guard), Jean Dujardin (The Artist) and Owen Wilson (Midnight in Paris). One more anomaly worth mentioning: Madonna, whose W.E. track “Masterpiece” is up for best song.

Abby Elliott Is The Latest Comedian To Go Glam In Super Sexy Maxim Shoot

We’re sure that Abby Elliott originally had a very lovely, chic, tasteful dress for her upcoming spread in Maxim . But someone must have spilled red wine on or or something, because when the time for the photo shoot came, the SNL heart throb went before the flashbulbs wearing nothing but her skivvies. Not that we’re complaining! In fact, Abby is just the latest comedy star to pose for some glossy (and did we mention uber sexy!?) magazine spreads. Kim Kardashian In Minnesota Vs. SNL: Who Had The Best Performance?

“All week we’ve just been crying and crying and posing and crying and …,” Nasim Pedrad whined, playing Kim Kardashian in SNL‘s hilarious spoof of “Kim’s Fairytale Divorce” over the weekend. Our stomachs still hurt from laughing. But seriously, folks. We’re not sure if Nasim can match the real-life posing Kim did in front of husband-for-now Kris Humphries‘ house in Minnesota on Sunday.

She was photographed standing on his back porch, looking distressed while talking on her cell. Here’s the thing: We know the impulse to step outside when you want a minute alone to talk on the phone, especially after a fight with someone inside the house. But that is a big freaking house. There are many rooms in which she could probably talk in private. And obviously, if you’re Kim Kardashian, you know there are paparazzi outside, ready to catch your every gesture. So, color us cynical, but that phone call seems a little much.
