Critics’ Choice Movie Awards: Our Favorite Speeches, Toasts And Deaths

For some people, an awards show is all about who wins and who’s snubbed. For those people, we have this list. For others, however, it’s about all of those other moments in-between — the awkward speeches, the hilarious skits, the cutaways to the tipsy A-listers sitting at tables full of empties. Here’s a list of our favorites from the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards (in chronological order):

» Octavia Spencer began her Best Supporting Actress speech with a flustered, “Well I’m not prepared, I wasn’t a Girl Scout.” But then she pulled it together and quite elegantly thanked a whole lot of people.

» Christopher Plummer in his pink shirt, said he was “completely turned on” by his Supporting Actor win. “At my age, I need all the help I can get in that department.”

People’s Choice Awards Cutest Moments

The People have spoken. They apparently like Supernatural more than The Vampire Diaries, but we’ll forgive them for that, because they made some other good choices that wound up giving us a pretty cute People’s Choice Awards on Wednesday night. Like any awards show, there was singing, dancing and overly scripted jokes. Also there were kisses and giggles and sweet thank yous. We thought we’d highlight a few of our faves:

10. We saw Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence bonding backstage with co-star Liam Hemsworth’s gf Miley Cyrus. Good thing they get along nicely!

9. Emma Stone, daring to be different in her awesome green tux jacket, managed to make a clichéd message sound sweet: ” You have to stay true to yourself and don’t be afraid even if people say what you do isn’t cool.”

8. Paul Wesley called Ian Somerhalder “Smolderholder” as he opened the envelope for the Favorite Comedy Movie award.

7. Lea Michele pointed out her cousin in the audience WHO LOOKS EXACTLY LIKE LEA MICHELE.

6. Ian Somerhalder was sitting next to Nina Dobrev when she won Favorite TV Drama Actress, but he tweeted her anyway: Congratulations Nina!!! You won!!!! People DO like you;) You rock babe, truly.”

5. Chloe Moretz realized she’s too young to really say “when I was a kid” and then she ended her speech like she was on the phone with all of us, “All right, bye.” Bye, Chloe, see you soon!

Megan Fox’s New Job Is A Pool-Side Breeze

This is rather different from her treatment on the Transformers set, from which she was ignominiously fired thanks to her various tiffs with director, Michael Bay. Megan Fox posted a new photo on her Facebook page showing her in a radically changed set. The movie she’s involved in is a Judd Apatow flick called This is 40, and is reportedly a spin-off of Knocked Up. Megan has a small role in the movie which also stars Apatow’s wife, Leslie Mann and Paul Rudd. Also, Jason Segel and Chris O’Dowd who the actress is seen posing with in a pool.

The happy trio posed between takes for the shot and Megan wrote, “On set of This Is 40 with Jason and Chris…Two very handsome, very tall, VERY funny men.” Good to know she’s having a blast and not fighting with her director this time. Her co-stars seem to be on pretty sweet terms with her as well. Leslie Mann told MTV in a recent interview, “Megan Fox is so funny. She’s hilarious. You wouldn’t, I don’t know if other people expect it, but I think she is really funny. You’ll be pleasantly surprised.” We’re going to withhold judgement on that one, but we’re happy to see Meggy looking so relaxed!

Jon Hamm Will Be Really Handsome on IFC Now

It looks like we’re about to get a double dose of man-god Jon Hamm this January. Not only is it the much anticipated return of Mad Men, but the chiseled actor has a little something extra up his sleeve. Apparently his turns on SNL and in Bridesmaids have whetted his appetite for comedy, and he is joining the cast of David Cross’ The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret, set to air its second season on the IFC. The series centers around Cross as a mailroom clerk who talks his way into running an English energy drink cooperation.

No word on the role he’s going to play, but considering the show is also written by Cross, and co-stars his Arrested Development pal Will Arnet, we have extremely high hopes for the show. It’s a shame it’s only six episodes a season! But still there’s more coming up for the Mad Man. He’s reportedly attached to an upcoming Judd Apatow comedy co-starring Melissa McCarthy. What a Hamm! (*zing* See, Jon isn’t the only comedian around these parts)

Freaks And Geeks and Undeclared Casts Reunite In LA

We know school is important to you, James Franco, but we think you’re going to regret not attending your high school reunion—at least the reunion of the Freaks & Geeks and Undeclared casts that went down this weekend at the Paley Center. After all, if Jason Segel and Linda Cardellini could both make it, despite everyone knowing Forgetting Sarah Marshall was inspired by their break-up, then anyone could could risk an awkward moment or two. Then again, maybe they wouldn’t have been so open about Franco’s “method” acting, including a crew-scaring moment where he threw on-screen lover Busy Phillips on the ground (in character). “He is the only one among all of you to be nominated for an Academy Award,” noted show creator Judd Apatow.

Amy Adams, The King’s Speech Own The Producers’ Guild Awards

It’s a shame we posted Amy Adams‘ Top 20 Hottest Dresses before this year’s Producers’ Guild Awards—her low-cut look last night would have had a good shot at #1. Despite the presence of cast charmers like Justin Timberlake, The Social Network‘s awards season streak hit a speed bump at the ceremony, with The King’s Speech stealing off with the Daryl F. Zanuck award for Best Feature. Other big winners were Toy Story 3, Mad Men, Modern Family and The Colbert Report.

On the less triumphant front was host Judd Apatow, whining that Ricky Gervais was a mean ol’ meanie at The Golden Globes. “Tim Allen did 200 episodes of Home Improvement. He was in three of the highest grossing movies of all time. And his latest just crossed the one billion mark. Whereas The Invention Of Lying made $18 million dollars worldwide…Leave Tim Allen alone.” Is the guy who brought us Seth Rogen and Freaks & Geeks really telling us we shouldn’t mock the rich and successful because they’re rich and successful? It’s nice to be nice, but when it comes to celebrity kiss-ass competitions, we prefer whichever host is the funniest.

Pee Wee Is Going To Have Another Big Adventure

59346761

We. Are. So. Excited. There is going to be another Pee Wee Herman movie made, which will be produced by Judd Apatow‘s production company! Oh, how our childhood was molded by Pee Wee’s first adventure, traveling across these great United States in search of his bicycle, all the while discovering the Alamo doesn’t have a basement and trying not to get clobbered by Simone’s boyfriend Andy at the Dino Park.

Paul Reubens revived the Pee Wee character for a stage show which has been performing to sold out audiences in L.A. this year (and will come to New York in the fall). Apatow took in one of the performances and got the idea for a new movie, saying “Let’s face it, the world needs more Pee-wee Herman. I am so excited to be working with Paul Reubens — who is an extraordinary and ground-breaking actor and writer. It’s so great to watch him return with such relevance.” The love is mutual, as Reubens seems equally thrilled to partner with Apatow, saying “There is no one like Judd in our business — he loves comedy with emotion and heart, and he sees what we do as art. I can’t believe I’m getting this opportunity to be working with him.” This can’t happen fast enough, in our opinion. The real question though is will evil bike thief Francis Buxton return??

Rogen and Apatow Diss Heigl

heigl-apatow-rogen

Outspoken Katherine Heigl is getting a taste of her own medicine from her former colleagues, Judd Apatow and Seth Rogen. After Knocked Up came out, Heigl said of the film, “It’s a little sexist…It paints the women as shrews, as humorless and uptight, and it paints the men as goofy, fun-loving guys.” It’s been two years since she made that statement, but ironically in that time she’s also made a bunch of garbage that’s far worse for women and far less funny than Knocked Up. (27 Dresses, anyone?)

Rogen and Apatow were on Howard Stern this week and finally got a chance to respond to Heigl. Rogen told Stern, “I gotta say, it’s not like we’re the only people she said some bats–t crazy things about. That’s kind of her bag now,” while Apatow made fun of her role in The Ugly Truth (where Heigl plays an uptight woman facing off against a goofy, fun-loving guy…say whaaa?), saying, “I hear there’s a scene where she’s wearing underwear with a vibrator in it, so I’d have to see if that was uplifting for women.” Advantage, Team Apatow. Wonder if Heigl plans to respond to that. [Photos: GettyImages]

Interview: Jason Segel Wants A Man Date With Barack Obama

Jason Segel, who made a name for himself by starring on Judd Apatow‘s cult TV hit Freaks & Geeks, has the same laid-back, California vibe that he exudes in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. He also has a razor-sharp wit. Maybe this is why he seems like a natural fit to co-star as Paul Rudd‘s new Best Dude Forever in I Love You, Man — an exploration of male friendship that opens tomorrow (March 20). We spoke with Jason about the real-life nature of his man friends, whether he’s a “girlfriend guy” or a “guy’s guy” and what Hollywood hunk he’d most like to have a man date with. Answer: The First African-American President of the United States is more his type.

Scandalist: I Love You, Man has a hilarious cast, including you, Paul Rudd, Andy Samberg, Rashida Jones, Jon Favreau and Jaime Pressly. Which one of you was the “class clown” while filming the movie?

Jason Segel: I’d have to say Andy. Andy Samberg. He’s hilarious from the moment he arrives on set, which is 6 a.m., to the moment he leaves. But there was this one moment … Forgetting Sarah Marshall had just come out when they began filming I Love You, Man, and I was feeling a little down because Forbidden Kingdom had beat it by $1 million. A woman approached me on the way to set, and said: “I just need to tell you I saw the movie this weekend and I loved it.” When she walked away, Andy turned to me and said, “She thinks you’re Jet Li.”
