Michelle Williams Says Short Hair A “Memorial” To Heath Ledger

Michelle Williams can pull off a pixie cut better than Tinkerbell herself (plus, she looks better in green!), but it turns out the My Week With Marilyn actress keeps her locks cropped for a reason other than her insane cheekbones. “I cut it for the one straight man who has ever liked short hair and I wear it in memorial of somebody who really loved it,” Williams tells Elle, explaining that ex Heath Ledger always preferred her with a short cut. No, we aren’t crying; we just got something in our eye! Like a short, fabulous bang!

“What Matilda would love is for her mom to grow out the cropped hair, though that’s unlikely to happen any time soon,” Michelle laughed. “Of course, the only people who like it are gay men and my girlfriends. Straight men across the board are not into this hair!” Far be it from us to disagree with a 6-year-old and 90 percent of men on the planet (allegedly), but we think Michelle’s cropped hair looks gorgeous on her. So amazing, in fact, that we decided to rep for all the other ladies, from Rihanna to Tilda Swinton, Emma Watson to Robyn, who have looked amazingly hot with short hair. Because Monroe herself rarely went longer than a bob, and that’s real.

A Final Bow: River Phoenix Is The Latest Star To Release A Posthumous Film

In the words of music legends The Kinks, celluloid heroes never really die. And strangely, some of them continue to produce work even after they’ve gone to the big expensive trailer in the sky. Earlier this week it was announced that River Phoenix’s unfinished last film Dark Blood is finally getting a release eighteen years after his passing. Head to the gallery below for more departed thespians who’ve had films released after their death.

Oscar Flashback: Red Carpet Memories From 2011′s Nominees

While some first-time nominees like Christian Bale have never attended the Oscars, plenty of this year’s crop have been red carpet regulars. Nicole Kidman‘s first time at the Academy Awards was just over twenty years ago, back when she was Tom Cruise‘s arm candy. “I just was like absolutely stunned,” she said recently. “It was like the biggest thing I had ever seen. I couldn’t believe how loud the photographers were.” Do you remember which Best Actor hopeful brought his mom the first time he was up for the trophy ten years? Or which two ladies up for a trophy in 2011 previously competed against each other in 2006? Find out all this and more—like who went with Ed Begley Jr. right before hooking up with her future husband—by checking out the gallery below.

Aussie Model Gemma Ward Discusses Her Relationship With Heath Ledger

Michelle Williams was not the only woman affected by Heath Ledger‘s death in 2008. Australian model-turned-actress Gemma Ward, who was dating Ledger just before his passing, is opening up in an interview about their relationship as well. Ward was linked to Ledger briefly for a just a few months, and has tried to stay quiet about their relationship until now. “I have taken a break from the media spotlight for the past few years and it was something spurred by Heath’s death,” she told the Herald Sun. “(Heath and I) first met in New York and we were both struggling with things that I won’t get into,” Ward said cryptically.

Ward was reluctant to start a relationship with Ledger, explaining “I kind of met him at first and said, ‘Listen my mum’s living with me right now and I’m kind of going through a hard time and I’m not interested in having a serious relationship with somebody right now’ and he was like, ‘You know, um, let’s just be there for each other through these hard times we’re both going through’. And we developed a relationship and we started seeing each other.” The two were both from Perth, Australia and spent their Christmas holidays together there in 2007. Ledger died soon after returning to New York. Ward, who was a model at the time, has also said that Ledger gave her acting advice, “He told me to always be a punk and ‘stand up for yourself.’” Sounds like it worked, she managed to nab a role in the next Pirates Of The Caribbean film which comes out later this year.

Michelle Williams: Nothing Can Fill Void Left By Heath’s Death

board of review gala 110111

After initially pulling back her comments about Heath Ledger, Michelle Williams is opening up about the actor’s death more than ever, this time in the February issue of Marie Claire. “Obviously, for me and for [Matilda], there’s a hole in our life,” the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards-nominated actress explained. “Of course the natural inclination is to want to fill it and make it disappear, but what I’ve come to recently is that it’s impossible. Nothing will fit in that hole because what we want back we can’t get, which is this one person.” Even if it is extremely personal, we applaud Williams for opening up about Ledger. We don’t like the idea of a world without Heath either, and that’s based on his performance in 10 Things I Hate About You alone.

Not that Michelle is ready to indulge in any new romances at this point in her life. “My poor mom really wants me to meet someone. I think she wanted to believe the Ryan Gosling rumor more than anybody,” Michelle laughed, finally crushing that particularly sexy dream for us. If Michelle and Ryan’s smoking hot romance isn’t in the cards, maybe Grandma Williams can take solace in know that Kate Winslet fantasizes about Michelle. “From a distance, I feel as if I’ve actually been having a secret love affair with Michelle. She and I are quite intimate in my fantasy friendship, built on admiration and respect,” Winslet admitted. Even if it is strictly just professional, that is one pretend relationship we wholeheartedly endorse.

Michelle Williams Gave “Devastating” Interview About Heath “To Please People”

60490596

Having recently opened up about her ex-boyfriend and father of her child in a deeply personal episode of Nightline, it seems that Michelle Williams now regrets giving the interview about Health Ledger. When chatting with the Daily Beast, a frustrated Williams explained, “I just had an experience with Nightline that got edited in such a way that seemed as if I did go too far. It was a three-hour interview that was edited in such a way that was devastating to me.” In addition to producers whittling her words down into sound bites, Williams seems to blame herself in part for saying too much in the interview about ex Heath. “I mean, I am still such the-good-girl. I want everybody to like me. I want everybody to be happy. I want to please people. So that desire in the moment overrode that ‘me’ that is on top of myself, that ‘me’ that is on top of a situation,” Michelle said. Well, if her Golden Globe nomination is any indication, liking Michelle Williams isn’t a problem for the general population, regardless of what she reveals about her personal life.

Chopped-up and reassembled as it may be, it sounds like much of the sentiment expressed in the interview remains true. When asked how her feelings about Ledger might more accurately be expressed, Williams muses, “How do I talk about this? I experienced a lot of loss after his death. I lost my city because of all the paparazzi descending upon us. I actually lost my journal during that time, oddly enough. I literally couldn’t hold on to anything. It felt as if things were literally slipping through my fingers. Things were just streaming away from me. I lost my sense of humor. I’m still sort of looking for that.” Hey, give yourself a break Michelle. Until your funny bone resurfaces, we’ll be happy to act as a back-up for you.

Michelle Williams Opens Up About Heath Ledger’s Death

Just go open up a brand-new box of Kleenex now. You’re going to need them when you watch a teary-eyed Michelle Williams talk about Heath Ledger’s death. Normally close-lipped about her former fiancee and daughter Matilda’s father, Williams reveals that she’s wistful for the months immediately following Heath’s death in 2007. “In a strange way, I miss that year, because all those possibilities that existed then are gone,” she said. “It didn’t seem unlikely to me that he could walk through a door or could appear behind a bush. It was a year of very magical thinking, and in some ways I’m sad to be moving further and further away from it,” Williams admits. You know that thing, where you’re crying so hard you can’t breathe? That’s what we’re dealing with right now.

As for finding meaning in Ledger’s death, Williams, who’s up for a Critics’ Choice Movie Award for Blue Valentine, says she’s still at a loss. “The actual event itself…I can’t find a meaning for it. I can find meanings in things and people and relationships that have sprung up and friendships that have strengthened…but not in why.” Excuse us while we write the rest of our posts from the ladies’ room; we’re going to need a lot more paper products than we expected to handle this weeping.

FABLife’s DVD Pick Of The Week

The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus

Terry Gilliam is not a lucky man. The director is beloved by fantasy fans for the skewed vision on display in films like Brazil and 12 Monkeys. But he’s had movies taken away from him by studios and even had a production wiped out by a flood. Imaginarium was no exception. Star Heath Ledger died from a fatal overdose halfway through shooting. Fortunately, friends Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell agreed to fill the breech. The imaginarium is a mirror through which people can see their heart’s desires, and Ledger is the mysterious stranger who joins Dr. Parnassus’s caravan. The motley ensemble—including Austin Powers‘s pint-sized star Verne Troyer—are hounded by a devil in the form of Tom Waits, who intends to claim the doctor’s daughter (Lily Cole) for himself. Gilliam fills the movie with eye-popping visuals and knockabout comedy; imagine Avatar, but with a world filtered through Victorian cartoons rather than Yes album covers. It’s a fitting tribute to a star and director who both dared to let their reach exceed their grasp.

Extras: An audio interview with Ledger and footage from his wardrobe test. Gilliam gives an introduction and commentary. Deleted scene, 15 minutes of behind-the-scenes stuff.
