FABLife’s DVD Pick Of The Week

Nine

A musical based on 8 ½, the impenetrable Federico Fellini film from 50 years ago? God knows what anybody was thinking–aside from hoping that maybe this tuner would repeat the success of the Oscar-winning Chicago. The songs are pretty unmemorable and the story is as underpowered as an Audi on bricks, but there are some good things here. Daniel Day-Lewis plays the genius movie director who has run out ideas. Seeking refuge from his producers and the press at a seaside spa, he is both tormented and delighted by visions of the women in his life. Day-Lewis is as watchable as ever; Penelope Cruz does a pole dance, and Fergie is an unexpected surprise as a prostitute singing “Be Italian” like her next plate of pasta depended on it. Judi Dench warbling in a basque, however, is enough to make one drive nails through their eyes.

Extras: Commentary track, three music videos and plenty of “making of” featurettes.

Celebrity Doppelgangers

doppelgangers

Common folk eat up comparisons to their famous look-a-like, but what about celebrities themselves? Via makeup, plastic surgery, and sheer coincidence, duplicates of our beloved stars are running rampant all over Hollywood, or in Lady Gaga‘s case, gracing our currency. Here are 20 of our favorite, unrelated, doppelgangin’ celebs. [Photos: Getty Images]

Nine NYC Premiere Brings Out All The Ladies

Penelope Cruz, Nicole Kidman, Kate Hudson

Madonna and Lourdes were only two of the women strutting their stuff at the NYC premiere of Nine last night. For the first time, all the Critics’ Choice Movie Award nominee’s female stars were in attendance on the red carpet: Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz, Kate Hudson (who skipped out on the LA premiere), Fergie (who missed the London one), Marion Cotillard and Judi Dench. Also present were Daniel Day-Lewis, Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Tobey Maguire, Kimora Lee Simmons, Goldie Hawn (supporting daughter Kate) and Naomi Watts (who should have helped pal Kidman with her support). Check out their ensembles in the gallery below.

10 Movies Looking For Award Season Love

up_in_the_air_5401

Award season is heating up in Hollywood, with Up In The Air already taking Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress from the National Board Of Review. Here are ten films films we expect to hear come up a lot this winter, as more cinema societies name their top movies of the 2009. Don’t forget—we’ve still got the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards, the Golden Globes and the Oscars to look forward to on TV. [Photo: Paramount Pictures]

  • Brothers

Movies directed by Jim Sheridan—that don’t star 50 Cent—have a tendency to snag award nominations for their actors. And Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire and Natalie Portman could each win their first major trophy for appearing in his Iraq war love triangle film. (Related: Natalie Portman Goes Blue For Brothers)

  • An Education

Though there are plenty of fussy European period pieces looking for award show love this year (Bright Star, The Last Station, The Young Victoria), one of the most promising is only (only!) set about forty plus years ago. Star Carey Mulligan has already won a Hollywood Award for her portrayal of a schoolgirl swept away by an older man of questionable ethics.

Dancing Boys & Glamour Girls At Nine Premiere

Daniel Day-Lewis, Judi Dench, Nicole Kidman, Rob Marshall, Penelope Cruz and Kate Hudson

The cast of Nine were one motley crew at the film’s London premiere Thursday night. Penelope Cruz and Kate Hudson took the opportunity to wear glamorous gowns with heavy, expensive coats (much to the delight of attendee Alex Rodriguez), while Nicole Kidman went with a light jacket and miniskirt. The men’s outfits didn’t mesh either, with director Rob Marshall‘s business suit clashing with Daniel Day-Lewis‘ flamboyant ballroom dancing uniform, complete with velvet jacket and high-waisted, red-striped pants (much to the delight of attendee Bruno Tonioli). Surrounded by this incoherence, Judi Dench‘s elegant yellow gown—suitable in all scenarios—won the night by default.

Blake Takes The Plunge At Pippa Lee Party

Blake Lively

Blake Lively looked like a wedding cake with cleavage at a screening for The Private Lives Of Pippa Lee last night in NYC. Just the kind of relaxing ensemble you want to wear while watching yourself lie naked with Alan Arkin onscreen. “Well, I think it’s uncomfortable, laying in strategically placed clothes that are taped on your body, in front of some strangers,” said Lively about her intimate scenes with the 75-year-old Oscar winner. “We’re all actors, we’re all professionals and we all understood what was happening. Everybody is uncomfortable with those scenes. You’re never going to be comfortable being half-naked in front of anyone. But, it was fine. It was a short scene.”

Sadly, Arkin wasn’t around to share more camera time last night, though co-stars Robin Wright and Keanu Reeves did attend, as well as well-wishers Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard and Daniel Day-Lewis, whose wife Rebecca Miller directed the film. Check out their styles in the gallery below.

Style Wars: Cruz Vs. Cotillard

Spanish bombshell Penelope Cruz became Spain’s first female Oscar winner for her performance in Vicky Christina Barcelona and French hottie Marion Cotillard became the first actress to win one for a French language film (2007′s La Vie en Rose). The actresses will star alongside Daniel Day-Lewis — not to mention Nicole Kidman, Judi Dench, Sophia Loren and Kate Hudson — in the musical Nine, to be released Nov. 25.

Both Cruz and Cotillard have attended premieres and parties at Cannes wearing elegant dresses and gowns. Despite a bout with food poisoning, Cruz wore a lilac gown while walking the red carpet for Broken Embraces, her latest Pedro Almodovar film. She’s also been spotted in a strapless, skin-colored dress and a cleavage-baring white ensemble. Cotillard has played it more conservatively — going for ultra minimal, elegant black and blue dresses.

Who’s Older? Michelle Pfeiffer Or Daniel Day-Lewis?

michelle pfieffer & daniel day-lewis

In 1989, Michelle Pfeiffer received her first Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Drama for The Fabulous Baker Boys—but lost the Oscar. That same year, Daniel Day-Lewis took home his first Oscar for Best Actor for My Left Foot—but lost the Golden Globe. Both actors were born on April 29. Which one is older?
