Queen Latifah Is A Class Act Onstage At VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul

Queen Latifah may have bypassed the red carpet at the VH1 Divas Celebrates Soul event last night, but that only served to make her onstage appearance even more of a hit. The Queen wowed everyone as she appeared to sing a duet with Dolly Parton — who changed into a different black gown than the black embellished dress she wore to maker her entrance. The singer wore an amazing Edition by Georges Chakra custom made blue crepe mermaid gown with a striking silver metallic neckline and a sexy slit. The make-up, hair and silver sandals that went with the gown were spot on, too. The perfect, classy choice for the evening — kudos, Your Highness.

Just Give Queen Latifah And Dolly Parton Oscars Now For This Joyful Noise Trailer

Shut it down. Shut the Academy Awards down now. Based on the Joyful Noise trailer, we know we don’t want to see Rooney Mara or Kirsten Dunst or whomever crying into their couture when Queen Latifah wins Best Actress in 2012. We also don’t want to see Brad Pitt sobbing into his beard when they turn the Best Actor category into another Best Actress category and give that one to Dolly Parton, because that is the only conceivable outcome we can foresee.

In addition to giving us Parton and Latifah mid-diva-off as competing candidates for director of a church choir, the film, due out on January 13, is seemingly jam-packed full of Oscar bait: Keke Palmer! Spot-on plastic surgery jokes! The fact Dolly Parton’s robe is inexplicably tailored to hug her ridiculous curves! Of course, we’re acting as if we ran the Academy Awards…and if that’s what we have to do to see this movie win Best Picture, well, then that is just what we’ll have to do.

The CoverGirl 50th Anniversary Celebration yesterday in West Hollywood drew its fair share of stars. Drew Barrymore, who we adore, turned up in a bright orange Jil Sander that just missed the mark. We love the color, but we don’t get the weird elastic band around her knees? Also…what’s up with the two-tone hair, Drew? Otherwise, love you, as usual.

The brand’s latest CoverGirl, Taylor Swift also made an appearance, posing for photos with Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi. Tay looked lovely in a strapless, sequined black dress, but the usual sparkle was missing in her smile, probably due to her split with Jake Gyllenhaal. Other celebrities included Sofia Vergara and Queen Latifah (wearing sunglasses and sneakers), plus starlets like Lauren Conrad, Whitney Port, Amber Riley, Jessica Lowndes and Sophia Bush. Seven Fashion Flops At The People’s Choice Awards

As the old saying goes, “Every yin has it’s yang.” Then again, maybe we’re thinking of “Every rose has it’s thorn.” Or even “What goes up, most come down.” Where’s that copy of Bartlett’s when we need it? Regardless! For all of the SQUEEing we did when Robsten (PHOTOS) emerged at last night’s People’s Choice Awards or OOOHing we did while watching last night’s other best dressed stars, we did an equal amount of SHUDDERing when we saw some of our favorite stars, um, well, not necessarily looking their best.

From unfortunate spray tan disasters — yo Tiz, shoulda checked yourself before you wrecked yourself — to Leighton Meester’s unusually disheveled appearance, here’s our selection of last night’s seven biggest fashion flops.

Celebrities Hog Spotlight At Super Bowl

Foolish athletes! Don’t you know who the real stars are?! While the football players did all the work on the field, stars like Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, Tom Cruise, and Ashton Kutcher showed up at the Super Bowl to hog all the attention and bask in the glow of the photographers’ cameras.

Kim Kardashian was there too, but she stayed surprisingly hidden during the game. Surely she was nervous watching her boyfriend Reggie Bush help to snag a win for New Orleans and probably wanted to bite her nails in private. But once Reggie and the Saints landed the trophy, ol’ Kimmy was back in front of the cameras, celebrating on the field like she had just won the game and posting a bunch of exclamation-filled tweets. M.J.’s Memorial: Most Beautiful Ever?

Our headline may sound a little over the top, but is it really? A crowd of around 17,000 Michael Jackson fans who were packed into L.A.’s Staples Center — plus an estimated billion people watching worldwide on live television — were given the show of a lifetime today. The event is already being billed as the first worldwide memorial service. Some highlights:

We watched Michael Jackson’s casket, gold-plated and covered in red flowers, being carried into the Staples Center and placed in front of the stage. (Watch the clip above and the whole M.J. memorial at VH1.)

We listened to Queen Latifah read a touching poem by Maya Angelou.

We listened to basketball great Magic Johnson talk about the “greatest moment” of his life: Eating a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken with Michael Jackson. (We never knew the Gloved One was so, um, average.)

We watched Brooke Shields, who struggled to speak through tears, say that Michael Jackson was “pure, non-jaded and a lover of life.” Rumored to have dated Jackson in the 80s, Brooke described becoming friends with the King of Pop when she was 13 years old and how the two bonded over being child stars.

We listened to Smokey Robinson, who wrote several songs made famous by Michael, read condolences from both Diana Ross and Nelson Mandela.

We watched Motown founder Berry Gordy say that Michael Jackson was “the greatest entertainer that ever lived.”

We watched a heartfelt, soulful rendition of “Never Dreamed You’d Leave in Summer” by Stevie Wonder, who proclaimed that he wished he “hadn’t lived to see this day.” We watched riveting performances by Mariah Carey, Lionel Richie and Jennifer Hudson.

We also watched Usher‘s performance of “Gone Too Soon” (co-written by M.J. himself) start off shaky with a gasp for air and end in tears.

We listened as the Rev. Al Sharpton addressed Michael’s kids directly, saying: “Wasn’t nothing strange about your dad, it was strange with what your daddy had to deal with.” We’re not sure about that one, but we’ll let it pass.

We watched a stage full of celebrities and children sing “We Are the World,” the song written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie in 1985 and used to help fight famine in Africa.

We watched Michael Jackson’s weeping little daughter, Paris, say that that “daddy has been the best father that you can ever imagine and I just want to say that I love him so much” — easily the saddest moment of the day. Ugh. (Watch Paris Jackson speak here).

And we watched Michael’s big brother, Jermaine Jackson, sing and cry at the same time, which looked like a difficult feat to us.

Then again, we shed a tear or two while blogging — and that’s not easy to do, either.

Queen Latifah Sued By Her Makeup People

What happened to U.N.I.T.Y. between women? Because it looks like the only thing uniting Queen Latifah and her makeup artists right now is a lawsuit. Latifah is being sued by two women, cosmetologist Roxanna Floyd and stylist Susan Moses, after they accused her of breach of contract and non-payment.

The women worked with Latifah on her CoverGirl ad campaign as well as on her Curvations lingerie line and they claim they were promised a salary that was never paid. All told, they are asking for $1 million in compensation for work they did from 2005 to 2008. A spokeswoman for Latifah says the claims are without merit.

Fashion Face-Off: The Ladies Of Music

Sure, the Oscars are mostly a night for actors to get together and celebrate their work while bitterly judging each other silently. But every year some singers sneak into the party, and tonight all of the songstresses on the red carpet have performed on film as well. Miley Cyrus has The Hannah Montana Movie under her belt, Alicia Keys starred beside Scarlett Johansson in The Nanny Diaries, Beyonce rocked it in Dreamgirls and Queen Latifah was Oscar-nominated for her work in Chicago.

Tina Fey Does It Again

Tina Fey reprised her role as Sarah Palin in yet another dead-on Saturday Night Live parody. This time, SNL guest Queen Latifah joined a sketch of the VP debate as debate moderator Gwen Ifill. Joe Biden, played by Jason Sudeikis, said that John McCain was “bad at his job” and “mentally unstable” and a “dear, dear friend.” He also debunked the notion that’s he’s a “Washington insider” by proclaiming that’s he’s from Scranton, Pennsylvania — “the worse place on earth” filled with “sad and desperate people with no ambition.”

Palin, who changed the moderator’s topics to suit her pre-prepared talking points and evoked Ronald Reagan‘s name for the sake of evoking Ronald Reagan’s name, had at least three devastatingly funny one-liners, including …

On fixing the economy: “We would ask what would a maverick do in this situation, and, then, you know, we’ll do that.”

On the cause of global warming: We don’t know if it’s man-mad or just “a natural part of The End Of Days.”

On her health care policy: “I’m going to ignore that question and instead talk about Israel. There’s a special place for Israel in heaven. And I know some people are going to say I’m only saying that to pander to voters in Florida. But from a very young age, my two greatest loves were always Jews and cuban food.”
