In 2002, the San Francisco Department of Health introduced Clark The Penis, an eight-foot-tall walking and talking schlong, to warn citizens about the dangers of syphilis. Clark was a big hit—even appearing on The Daily Show—and STD numbers went down over the next few years. The character was retired in 2006, but a recent spike in syphilis cases has brought him out of retirement. Now joined by African-American Byron the Penis and Hispanic-American Pedro the Penis, Clark will appear in a new series of “Healthy Penis” ads this year. Sadly, only a watered-down version of the campaign, “Stop The Sores,” has been initiated in other cities. Can the rest of America not handle the sight of a giant, smiling penis? We hope otherwise.
