Just this summer, we were rooting for Taylor Swift. We wept softly at our desk as we listened to Fearless (ugh, we were “Fifteen” once too!) and jumped on the Kanye-bashing bandwagon after the VMAS. Then came her triumphant stint hosting “Saturday Night Live,” and it seemed that she could do no wrong. She even wrote a love song to her mother, for Christ’s sake!
Yet just as quickly as we fell in love, we’ve fast grown disenchanted with Taylor’s ‘Surprised Princess Of All Things Perfect And Oh! Look At My Hair!’ shtick. She’s like one breathless, blond version of Groundhog Day – every time we see her she’s doing the same exact thing, and it’s grown damn old real fast.
After forcing ourselves to sit through The Taylor Swift Awards The Grammys on Sunday, we compiled our list of 5 Reasons To Hate Taylor Swift, complete with a giant gallery of the singer busting out her signature award – accepting moves (the open mouth, the glazed over look, the hands on the heart). And while we must admit to feeling a bit guilty about bashing a girl who’s just barely out of her teens and could teach Lindsay Lohan and friends a thing or too about class and stability, the Taylor backlash has gotten too strong to ignore. Besides, it’ll make great fodder for her next album!
- 1. Her ‘OMG! I can’t believe I just won this award! I mean, I’ve been nominated for over 87 awards and have won 59 of them, but seriously, OMG! I AM IN SHOCK!’ reaction every time she wins something. Look, we know it must be thrilling to snag a ton of trophies before reaching the legal drinking age, but get it together, girlfriend. Just because your song is named “Breathless,” doesn’t mean you have to be.

- 2. The fact that she kinda can’t sing in public (also known as the ‘I can’t believe Stevie Nicks was relegated to playing tambourine behind Taylor Swift’ complaint). Holy crap, did you hear this mess at the Grammys?
We’re starting to suspect that maybe Tay’s voice isn’t all that when she’s not being digitally enhanced in the studio. And we won’t take nerves as an excuse – she’s been doing this since she was 14, she should be a pro by now.
- 3. The way she flops her luxurious locks. When we polled people about why they loathed Taylor, numerous haters pointed us in the director of her hair tossing moves. Start the video above at the 3:25 mark to see it in action. Does her heavy metal rockin’ rub you the wrong way too?
- 4. Taylor’s sparkle princess uniform. We get it Taylor, you are a pure pretty princess, made up of sugar, spice, all things nice, and 100,000 Swarovski crystals and sequins in varying shades of white, gold and silver. (Examples here, here and here!) The only thing more cloying and saccharine than her outfits are her awards show speeches. Leave the fairy tale stuff to your new single, puh-leeez.
- 5. 24/7 Taylor syndrome has finally taken its toll. Clearly Tay’s people got a little overexcited when their girl started making headlines, and they pushed her way too far out in front of the paparazzi cameras. Fake-dating Taylor Lautner was the final straw – we want to see the girl live her real boring life, not a bogus one. Apparently her publicists are even worried that she’s gotten overexposed and are forcing their cash calf into hiding.

I mean, she has a good personality; she’s an okay singer, but all her songs sort of say that she had a bad story with a happy ending. Geez, nobody cares! Her life is perfect now! Many singers/actors had a hard life growing up. Even though she was bullied, she still had support in music from her parents. Many kids who were/are bullied didn’t get to do anything to express it. All they do is just live everyday with it because they’re not “Music is my whole life” freaks. How many parents actually let their children try in the music business when THEY don’t even sing themselves? Her grandmother was an opera singer, but her parents weren’t. Joe Jonas broke up with her. Now she has to complain about it all the time. Guess what? Not everybody will love you forever. Sure, she should get a little shocked, but not like she never won an award before. And for the people who said that Kate Spencer just loves Taylor Swift more than her fans be quiet. If someone loves a certain singer, they don’t say they hate them. I know this is a late comment, but I just read an article about her on Yahoo today. About how she is this wonderful role model. While I give her snaps for being successful, I feel people’s impressions of her are blinded by the upbeat tunage of her songs. Women, with daughters, do not really listen to the words she is singing. It’s not even the whole “I’m VIRGINAL” written on her forehead that gets me. It’s what her songs are about. I had this discussion with my 13 year old sister, while I am 23, about a month ago while I was visiting at Christmas. My little sister is bight, a new teenager, and is sadden because her boobs are tiny while her friend’s all have big ones in comparison. My sister, in her younger years loved Swift. Knew all her songs and sang them loudly. I have always been more rebellious, never shutting up, the “whore,” pushing the point of what my mother found acceptable (though now she just ignores me). My sister received Swift tickets for her 13th birthday, and she was upset. My mother was telling me while my sister was in the room. I asked Cameron, my sister, why she was upset. Her words, “Well Liv, I used to like Taylor you know? And then I started to listen to her new songs and they were just like her old songs. All she sings about is having a boyfriend, or how she wants a boyfriend, or how some boy she wants to be her boyfriend does not want to be her boyfriend. And I like boys Liv but I do not want to listen to music about always wanting a boyfriend.” I found that interesting, that is why I did not really like her. She always talked about wanting a man, needing one to be happy. She would never be happy until she had a man. And if women want this message sent to their daughters then that is their issue. But I could not agree more with my sister for why she is not a very good role model.

I completely agree with this article. Every time I say I don’t like Taylor Swift, people look at me like I just killed a puppy. Her songs are so washed up, if you’ve heard one, you’ve heard them all. And she is obviously not mature enough to accept responsibility for any of the failed relationships she writes about. It’s always the man’s fault. She acts like a giant 4-year-old, and it’s incredibly annoying. I hope she goes away soon.
