Stars In Seriously Good Spirits At Oscar Nominees Luncheon

It’s overcast in Los Angeles today, but that didn’t stop this year’s batch of Oscar nominees from smiling at the annual Academy Award luncheon, honoring them and their competition at the iconic Beverly Hilton. Celebs like George Clooney, Viola Davis, Melissa McCarthy, Brad Pitt and Michelle Williams popped into the press room in between cocktails and kept reporters laughing with their banter and silly answers. I was there, hiding in the corner with my laptop, and it seriously sounded like the inside of the Laugh Factory. Who wouldn’t be happy hobnobbing with their A-List peers over some seriously good food?

George Clooney was the first of the talent to hit the press room. “I got here early for the booze,” he joked. The actor, nominated twice this year, might just be the most beloved man in Hollywood. He knew all the reporters and even ribbed one guy about his vest. “Did your wife make that?” teased George. I’ve never seen a man charm a room of people so effortlessly as the Cloonster. Even more delightful – his gorgeous, silver hair. Sorry Anderson Cooper, but a new number one Silver Fox has arrived.

Adam Lambert: “Ignorant People” Make Being Gay Hard

A video of Adam Lambert performing “Outlaws of Love” — a song we’re thrilled to hear on his upcoming album, Trespassing — at a concert in Montreal found its way onto Youtube this past summer. In the clip, the singer talks about “acceptance” being a big inspiration behind his song-writing, specifically for “Outlaws of Love.” We asked Adam about it during our recent sit-down.

“I think one of the things about doing this as a career is that I’m able to give people strength and encouragement that feel like outsiders, especially being openly gay,” he told us. “But one of the things I haven’t gotten to do is sing about how it sucks sometimes, how it hurts, and the pain and the struggle that the LGBT community goes through on so many different levels. And that’s what this song is about.

Bridesmaids Director Paul Feig Really Wants To Be A Guest On The Howard Stern Show

Paul Feig, creator of Freaks and Geeks and director of Bridesmaids, is a Howard Stern Show superfan. And I, Kate Spencer, creator of a really good bowl of cereal that I just had for lunch, am a Paul Feig and Howard Stern Show superfan. So naturally, when I interviewed Paul at the People’s Choice Awards this month, the first thing I blurted out was: “I want you to be a guest on Howard Stern!”

I’m guessing this is the first time Feig’s ever encountered a reporter trying to match-make him with a radio show, and his response was priceless. “I wanna be on there!” he exclaimed, as Wendi Mclendon-Covey looked on with a smile. “Please Howard, have me as a guest. I won’t be a bad guest.” Paul’s been a fan of the show for over thirty years, starting back when Howard first went on the air in his native Detroit in the early 80s. “I’m one of Howard’s biggest fans!” He said. “I love Howard; I love the whole gang.”

If you’re not familiar with Feig’s work, pick up a copy of his hilarious memoir “Kick Me,” to learn all about his awkward adolescence, which so wonderfully inspired Freaks and Geeks, arguably one of the best TV shows ever made. He’s also an Emmy-nominated director of shows like The Office, Arrested Development, Nurse Jackie, Weeds, Parks and Recreation and Mad Men. He’s hilarious, he tweets pictures of his wife posing with Uggie the dog at the Golden Globes, and has been a Stern fan for over thirty years. He’s guaranteed to be an amazing guest, especially when paired with the King of all Media (aka the King of all Interviews).

Howard Stern is the best interviewer around (Who else could get David Arquette and Courteney Cox to discuss their divorce together?! And get Lady Gaga to open up for almost two hours? And get Chris Martin to actually speak about his marriage?) - and I’d love to see him dig into Feig’s dorky past and insanely successful present. So Howard (or Gary, or JD, or Jason, ~~or Bobo~~) – what do you say?

Birthday Boy Adam Lambert Talks Hunger Games Appeal, Possible Acting Career

I had the pleasure of sitting down with Adam Lambert earlier this week in Los Angeles, where we chatted about the usual: his new album, Trespassing, it’s awesome first single, “Better Than I Know Myself,” and our mutual obsession with The Hunger Games. Yes, in addition to being handsome and talented, Adam is also a total YA nerd. Stars are just like us, guys!

Adam had no idea that he was a fan favorite to plan Cinna back before the movie was cast. “I definitely identified with the character when I read the books,” he told us. “I think Lenny Kravitz is gonna be rad.”

When we pressed him on his allegiance to Team Gale or Team Peeta, Adam admitted, “I didn’t know there were teams!” He added, “I think the thing that was really clever about the books is that, much like Twilight, it really divides the two. They’re both really good guys, for different reasons.”

We also asked Adam if he’d ever given thought to a movie career (cough, the new Les Miserables movie, cough). “Yes, if someone wanted me to do it,” he said. “I grew up doing a lot of musical theater…and I think much of my last album was me playing a character. But I like music so much, and I think singing is kind of my gift, I think. But sure, why not!?”

Maybe a role that involves a little bit of both?

What can I say about Adam Lambert that you don’t already know? He is absolutely delightful, fun to talk to, and is wonderfully humble despite being mega-talented. I arrived at our interview in Beverly Hills this week to find Adam decked out in an all-black ensemble, the only color popping from his bright blue shoes. The singer, whose new album Trespassing drops mid-March, is well known for his eccentric fashion taste, but I couldn’t help but notice that his outfit was a bit on the subdued side. Naturally, I had to ask about his current sartorial mood.

“I think what you’re drawn to fashion-wise has to do with where you are emotionally and what you’re exploring in your life,” said Adam. “I think there was a point where, two years ago, in the middle of my first album, where it was all so ridiculous. And I was doing that on purpose. I was having so much fun being completely over the top. And that felt good, and that was what I wanted to express at the time.”

“I wanted to put feathers on and be this kind of glam-rock, glitter fantasy Lisa Frank unicorn,” he said of that time in his life. “I was kind of making a statement and being extra bold on purpose.”

Adam described his current fashion phase as “a little more streamlined, in my life too.” Said the singer: “I’m drawn to clothes that are just a bit more classic with an edge. Something that’s still weird and special; but I’m into a more geometric, darker [look].”

“But who knows,” he said with smile, “I may be wearing neon yellow tomorrow.”

I’m gearing up to cover the SAG Awards red carpet this Sunday, and couldn’t help but oogle over a couple of the nominees. Hunky, handsome with a little bit of grey in their hair, both Kyle Chandler and George Clooney are masters at playing sensitive, sexy dads on their respective screens. Chandler is nominated in the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Coach Eric Taylor on Friday Night Lights, aka everyone’s favorite show to tweet about. The Cloonster (Can I call you that, George?) is up for Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Lead Role for his work in the ukelele-heavy tearjerker The Descendants.

My dream of being sandwiched in Cloonster-Coach Taylor group hug may become a reality this Sunday night (Secreting it now), but only one of these fine, fictional fathers can be this week’s Hotness. There’s a party going on right here at the Beverly Hilton. The Golden Globes truly are a celebration to last through out the year. (Check out our favorite moments from the show!) Dare we say that it might even be the most fun night in Hollywood… EVER. Everyone — press, crew, celebs — is in good spirits, the booze is plentiful, and the emphasis is on having a good time. And everything is so pretty! The Beverly Hilton is a beautiful and iconic spot any day of the week, but there’s something extra magical about tonight’s event. The red carpet actually felt like a living, breathing thing and it. Is. FIERCE.

But the best part of the night was, of course, hearing from the winners, in all their sweet, excited glory. We were stationed in the press room and had the privilege of listening to all their best moments — from the absolutely ridiculous to the downright cry-worthy. We count ‘em down for you below.

Octavia Spencer kicking her shoes off in the middle of answering questions, and then delivering this important message: “Christian Louboutin, I love you, but when you have this much weigh you gotta give us a little platform.”

George Clooney answering the “Where is Ryan Gosling?” question: “He’s [working] in Thailand. And you know what they do in Thailand.“

Jessica Lange Says Evan Peters, Taissa Farmiga Are “Incredibly Emotional Actors”

Hello from the Golden Globes press room! Jessica Lange was just onstage answering questions after winning the award for Best Supporting Actress in a Supporting Role for her work on American Horror Story. She’s incredible on the show, and her scenes with Evan Peters and Taissa Farmiga are particularly chilling. As huge fans of AHS and its stars, we were curious about what it’s like for the two-time Oscar winner to work with the show’s young talent.

“I think they’re both incredibly emotional actors,” she told us. “Especially with Evan — he has a rawness to him that I find very exciting in actors, where you can’t anticipate what they’re going to do. And the emotions are right there, and to me that’s the most exciting kind of acting.” She added with a smile, “I enjoy working with both of them immensely.”

When asked about a second season of the hit show, Jessica coyly answered, “Nothing is definite.” We’ll take that as a yes and keep our fingers crossed!

Patton Oswalt Picks His Favorite Downton Abbey Villain Over A Sip Of Scotch

Patton Oswalt might just be my favorite red carpet interview of 2012 … and it’s only January. The Young Adult actor and Critics’ Choice Movie Awards nominee whipped out a flask on the CCMA red carpet (practicing for his onstage flask gag), while joking about how drinking at red carpet events is tacky. Yep, Patton Oswalt is my kinda guy.

Another reason he rules so hard: his love of everyone’s favorite Edwardian soap opera, Downton Abbey. Patton’s been tweeting about the show and may just be its most high profile fan. When we brought up the hit PBS show, he replied, “I don’t have eight hours on this carpet, young lady.”

When asked to pick his favorite villain — O’Brien or Thomas — he said, “They’re sort of giving both backgrounds as to why they’re both villainous, so I don’t really know that they’re villains! And how about Edith the middle sister?” he mused. “Isn’t she just as villainous?”

Yes! She’s the worst/best! As for the middle sister’s kiss with a married farmer, Patton said, “That was like turn-of-century Russ Meyer stuff.” Spoken like a true CCMA nominee.

Jason Segel Says Date With YouTube Fan Was “More Awkward” For Her

Jason Segel, star of the The Muppets, upped his awesome factor when he took a fan and her twin sister out in Chicago last week. Chelsea Gill posted an adorable video of herself singing an original song asking Jason out for drinks, and the star eagerly obliged. “It felt like hanging out with some of my friends,” the 23-year-old told Showbiz Tonight after the big date. “He’s so down to earth.”

At the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards, we asked about his decision to contact Gill and take her to the Chicago Film Critic Awards show. “I thought she showed a lot of guts!” he said. “It was really nice and really sweet and sorta reminded me of when I was a kid.”

Jason also spilled the dirty details about their very G-rated date. “We hung out with her and her twin sister,” he said. “It was cool. It was more awkward for them than it was for me. I like jumped right into and we started singing and stuff. She felt incredibly awkward.”
