Adam Lambert has said that his upcoming album, Trespassing, will be “an exciting journey through the past two years of my life.” Our first taste of that has come by way of his first single, “Better Than I Know Myself,” a mid-tempo ballad that features his signature confessional lyrics and soaring notes. But after he performed it live for the first time on The Tonight Show last night, we are curious about something: Was his completely toned-down outfit, a black tux and a white shirt with no tie (pictured right), a sign of things to come? It’s quite a different look from his typical performance-wear (left), but we don’t know if it was just for this occasion or if Glambert is making way for a more subdued, introspective Lambert. You aren’t shy, Glambert Nation, so let us know your theories! And if you missed the performance, a separate clip hasn’t been made available yet, so fast-forward to the last segment (38 minutes in) in the video below.

He’s maturing!
I like this look. It’s a cleaned up look and the focus is on his vocal talent more than what he’s wearing. Though he’ll probably switch it up. Just when you think you have him pegged he changes things.
Adam has said he’s going for a more designer chic look lately, rather than glam. You can’t deny that whether you like him or not (I happen to love him), he’s never boring!
Adam has said that his new album/songs will be ‘more leather, less glitter’. He has taken his time on this new album (as opposed to the short 3-month process of his first), resulting in a (using your words) more ‘subdued, introspective Lambert’. So, this is indicative of things to come!
Adam’s not a one trick pony–he’s a chameleon. And most of all, he’s an amazing entertainer with an awesome charisma, stage presence and out of this world vocal range! He likes to keep us guessing and thrilled at the same time! And he’s incredibly handsome with or without the guyliner!
If you are going to compare – why not compare apples to apples.
The ‘outfit’ on the left was from his GNT tour performance. Why not check out what Adam wore on his previous two Leno appearances? The contrast will be there, and it will show a shift in style, but the comparison will be in the proper context.
Your right Glamberts aren’t shy. First, I watched his performance last night on Tonight Show and was pleasantly surprised for several reasons;vocals were better live than studio version, he looked amazing, and his attire was gorgeous. Hope there is more to come of his new look. I believe that Adam has matured in past two years and that he is just expressing these changes in his wardrobe, song writing and vocals. The ending of this performance was mind blowing. I didn’t know anyone could sing that well live even though he’s hit high notes before this was different.

This “look” comes as no surprise to anyone that follows him. He has explained the look and direction of the music numerous times. He is and always has been an open book with what he wants to share. Just ask him…but he will always leave you wanting more but definately can change it up, which is part of his allure!!
Adam wore the pic on the left during one part of his Glamnation tour. That has never been typical of what Adam wears on his television appearances. If you’re going to compare, please do it correctly. Use Adam’s previous appearances on Jay Leno or Ellen rather than a costume from a distinctly atmospheric portion of his previous tour. If you have followed Adam’s preparation of this new album at all, you would have dozens off interviews where the brilliant vocalist tells about music reflecting dark and light of himself. It is more introspective. He has also previously mentioned he is–for the time being–leaving the glitter behind. I would also add he is leaving heavy make-up behind as well. His look simply reflects his music. Thanks for this opportunity.
I think we’ll be seeing many different Adams during era #2. He has said there are songs for every mood and when one of the dance songs comes up, we’re bound to see a little leather and his Rick Owens boots pop up. One of the fun things about Adam is his sense of adventure fashion-wise as well as vocally. He’s always said that his presentation reflects the lyrics. During GNT, the picture above was for VOODOO and DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE while much more sedate when doing SOAKED and SLEEPWALKER. Don’t worry, even though he’s growing up, he’ll still want to come out and play.
Adam said that he got over all the glitter, feathers and over the top looks, but he still likes the avant-garde clothes. His style is more classy, very fashionable and chic now and I think this change is reflected in his new album. He said that Trespassing is going to be more honest and personal. He is maturing, getting wiser
. I personally like this look more, but no matter what outfit I LOVE Adam Lambert.
I will address the performance. Adam slayed it, his vocals beautiful & emotional. His performance was heartfelt. Adam was charismatic, captivation, exciting. I loved the way he looked and was dressed – perfect. Adam owned the stage & everyone in the audience or watching at home.
Adam Lambert, perfect performance, great song, the best male singer in the business today…….
This is more classic look rather than subdued look and Adam has donned this look before. It fits the song and its mood and Adam looks and sounds like a multi million bucks. As always, a great performance and his voice has really come to a maturity. Rich in tone, emotional delivery, powerful and effortless glory notes of his make him so exciting watch, no matter what he’s wearing.
Adam likes to change it up. He will always surprise us!!!! Love Adam, love the song and can’t wait for the album.
He’s said several times over the last several months that his personal style is evolving away from the over-the-top looks that characterized his FYE era.
It doesn’t hurt that by de-glitterizing his look, he’ll be more appealing to a mass audience uncomfortable with glam (i.e. looks unfortunately seen by many as being “too gay”).
Personally, I’ll miss the over-the-top glam and glitter, leather and fringe because it was fun. Plain white shirt with a priest’s collar is tasteful.
(And before anyone jumps all over me with “Adam can wear whatever he wants”… Yes, he can.)
Definitely subdued and really fabulous!!!! He is just keeping us on our toes, as I am sure he will change it up as he always does depending on the occasion and/or song. I enjoy all the looks. By the way, the picture on the left is not his normal performance attire. Rather, it was for a theatrical segment of the GNT.Love the song! Love the look!
I love the new look ,classy and understated. It really suits the Trespassing style
Though if he won’t go back to the glitter and the eyeliner ,I think that I’ll have to say this but I’m gonna miss the old man.The Glam probably was differentiated him from every other artiste and the symbolic eyeliner have me the chills.I wonder if he’ll continue with over the top looks at least in concerts.I don’t know… I really really love the new look but in the back of mind nothing is clear… So can’t say that what’s better.
Adam looks fabulous in that tailored outfit, but as others have said, it should be pointed out that the first photo is a costume from a stage show – with a setting, theme and narrative. It’s not something he’d show up wearing to a talk show performance any more than Katy Perry would walk in with her peacock costume or whip-cream bra. I think he does want to strip it down and get more raw and real with this album, but one thing you can always say about Adam, is he loves to switch it up and he’ll keep surprising us. It’s a great ride and I pity those who let it pass them by.
Just when I thought I had gotten over my Adam addiction, he comes back on the scene looking like the classiest act ever and delivering a most amazing vocal performance. No distractions….just Adam at his finest!!!
This isn’t the first time Adam has ‘dressed down’. Refer to his performance of Aftermath on American Idol.I also think it suits the mood & sentiment of the song plus he’s often alluded to the fact that he currently favours a more high fashion look rather than a rhinestone one. Nobody dresses the same all the time & Adam in particular likes to change it up.I love it. But MORE importantly, how awesome were those vocals, right?
Adam’s signature move is that he is always changing it up. He did glam rock for a while, and now he’s going in another direction. His talent has always been enormous, but the makeup and glitter-glam costumes distracted some from it, and the media ignored him pretty much completely unless he did something outrageous. I’m hoping that with this new, toned-down yet still beautiful image, the music world will more clearly see that he is indeed a megastar.
Adam has said himself that he is putting the glitter behind him. Maybe not ALL the glitter. He’s grown a lot since his days on American Idol, touring the world, falling in love, getting into trouble, and he’s working with some of the greatest artists on earth right now. So, bring it on, Adam! Us Glamberts love all sides of you. Glitter or not.
He dnt want 2 blind tha crowd wit his awsomeness!! DUH!

Introspective, never subdued~AdamLambert
Missed the performance, are you kidding? I’ve watched it many times. What I like about Adam is his ability to “change things up” with both his songs and his look. I think he is maturing, toning things down, which is great, but his vocals are always spot-on. He sang the song different than the recording. Why does America hate talent so much that they would over look this guy and listen to the likes of Rhianna, Taylor and that McCreery kid who made me frustrated with Idol forever. God gave him this voice and I need to listen to it. But that’s just me.

He was absolutely astonishing.
You go sweet and WILD Adam!!
Adam Lambert does NOT do “typical”. He’s a theatre guy who does what he needs to to enhance the lyrics of any song. If anything is “typical” it’s that he gives his 100% to any performance in terms of vocals, arrangement, staging, lighting etc (whatever’s within his control). We watch him because nothing is the same with him!
Adam brings outstanding vocals and his own unique style to every performance, and he looks fierce no matter what he’s wearing.
.
@NOSKERDYCAT,@PHYLLIS AND @RON summed it up. One picture is from his Glamnation Tour….theatrical ‘costume’ worn in every one of his 100+ performances. The other….casual television appearance wear. One is a costume…the other….’real life’ wear. Adam is very fashion forward however the two looks are from two entirely different venues/performances.
Can’t you tell the difference?
P.S. He looked incredible last night on Leno. Very GQ. And the interesting thing about Adam’s fashion…it is never same-old,same-old…..he always keeps you guessing!!
Well, the left pic is in costume during his Glam Nation Tour. It’s not his typical TV performance outfit. Adam’s worn beautiful suits on TV previously, even on Idol. He’ll always change it up, but he has also recently stated that he is going for less glittery, less camp, and less is more now.
Adam looked beautiful on Leno, can’t wait to see his Ellen appearance, airing tomorrow. I’ve seen a pic tho, and he isn’t in a suit, but looks fabulous. Most importantly, Adam sounded INCREDIBLE on “Better Than I Know Myself” and I can’t wait to hear the rest of his album “Trespassing,” due 3/20/12.
Adam always changes it up and is definately a chameleon, I love all Adam looks: guyliner, no make up, t-shirt, glitter, whatever as long as he is singing with his beautiful voice!
I wanted to say something different but I agree with all the other comments and all has been said perfectly. One thing that hasn’t been said is adam deserves far more radio play, and to be taken much more seriously here in the states. As far as I’m concerned he is the most talented vocalist we have and needs to be heard alot more! There is such mediocre talent today with autotuned, lypsyncing ect and we have the real deal right in front of us in every way possible!

handsome and gorgeous as always
The Glam Nation outfit is hardly “typical”, I’m trying to figure out why you would feel the need to put it that way…hmmm. He just has so damn much style he can’t fit it all in one style.
This is Adam, the way I liked him the most!! Makeup free face, stylish, collected- A CLASS ACT–
He was absolutely astonishing, proving the public he matured into a high class performer.
What you seem to be missing, and other people have pointed out, is Adam’s spectacular voice. It wouldn’t matter if he was naked (well, it would because he is so HOT HOT HOT), but the most important thing about this beautiful, charismatic, amazing man is his out-of-this-world vocal ability!!! No one can sing like this wonderful, sweet, and humble man. People shouldn’t put so much stock in what he wears, but open their ears, and hearts and minds and listen to his once in a lifetime glorious voice. Adam’s voice puts everyone else in the business to shame. Love the man and his VOICE no matter what he does or doesn’t wear!!!!!!!!!
