Sloppy Mariah Gets A Lift On Today

Note to singers: do not perform on TV immediately after days of “doing publicity.” Judging from recent morning-show performances from Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey, you’re just asking for trouble. While Carey’s concert in Rockefeller Plaza for Today this morning wasn’t as hard on the ears as Houston’s Central Park debacle, her strained revisiting of 1991′s “Make It Happen” made painfully clear how much of her voice she’s lost over the last decade or so. Not that the fans or hubby Nick Cannon, waiting in the wings for another PDA, seemed to mind.

According to whispers in the New York Post, Carey’s voice may have been the victim of late night partying. Arriving at a New York restaurant at 1:30am recently, “she tripped twice and had to grab hold of one of her guards so she wouldn’t fall. She ordered a bottle of champagne but she could barely speak.” An affliction another source credited to—you guessed it—”18 hours of press.” And who knows how many “interviews” she had since then.

But more embarrassing than anything that went into her blinged-out microphone was some clumsy choreography during “Obsessed” in which she was lifted up and down by her back-up dancers. Once we get, but three times in a row? Why not just bounce her off a parachute? Check out the silliness after the jump.

After all that hoisting, it’s a miracle she didn’t get seasick! Will this performance be enough to help her beat Paramore for the #1 spot on next week’s album chart?
