Miss California Embarrasses Herself

We didn’t tune in to last night’s Miss USA pageant, as those things are normally boring and the best parts – the falls and vapidity – always make it onto YouTube. Last night’s show was no different, and today we were thrilled to enjoy this clip of Miss California, Carrie Prejean, stumbling her way through an inarticulate response to judge Perez Hilton‘s question about legalizing gay marriage.

We’ll leave her personal beliefs alone (even though, ya know, we disagree) but just watching her call heterosexual marriage “opposite marriage” makes the clip worth watching over and over again. Here’s a transcript of her answer:

“Well, I think it’s great that Americans are able to choose one or the other. We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite marriage. And you know what, in my country, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody out there, but that’s how I was raised and that’s how I think it should be between a man and a woman. Thank you very much.”

EPIC FAIL by Miss California…Sure it’s her opinion but she could’ve word it different to make it sound a bit more appropriate. Geez. Some people…

  • JV says:

It’s not like the contestants have the opportunity to prepare for the questions ahead of time. I would like to see how others react to a political question in national TV in front of millions. Everyone says that they aren’t making fun of her personal opinion, but they are. If she was for same sex marriage nothing would have come of this and she would have won.

  • LOSER says:

    EQUALITY FOR ALL!

  • L. says:

It’s so sad for me to hear Californians express their opposition to gay marriage. CA was one of the first – maybe even THE first – state to recognize interracial marriage, and now we’re sounding like a bunch of pigheaded jerks.

  • Hayely says:

Why in the WORLD is this considered to be “embarrassing herself”? Why can she not believe what she believes just the same way Perez does. What he did to her was wrong and she shouldn’t have received such a political question when other girls were answering questions about overcoming childhood nicknames! Ridiculous.

  • Ron says:

I don’t think she embarassed herself at all. She gave her opinion and that is not always going to be what everyone wants to hear. So she loses points because she didn’t answer the way he wanted her to? How is that fair? Everyone has different opinions. There are some people saying “Equality for all” but they are obviously not talking about when it comes to freedom of speech! I suppose Miss California will now be labeled an “extremist” and placed on the F.B.I. watch list.

  • qtricann06 says:

everyone has there own beliefs and if thts how she feels the i respect her for standing up there and voicing her belief and not going against them just because she want to win

  • WTF?? says:

I think she handled a serious question just right, she NEVER bashed anyone.. and she only said her belief , THEN ALSO SAID SHE IS NOT AGAINST GAYS!

how the hell did she embarrass herself?

Is HER relpy really going to make a diff? If its something u feel strongly for or against no ones words should matter!

I applaude herfor speaking her beliefs and not lying about it just to “WIN”
that is a true thing to be proud of .. a question which either way u are in a ~))%_*^(`$%*&*^! hole for answering and doing it so tasteful and not pushing her belifes or not bashing.

I personally am very proud of Miss California. Let’s leave it to the politicians to say what the people want to hear! She was honest, and she didn’t offend anyone. She clearly stated that it is great we live in a country where you can choose, and then stated her beliefs on the matter. I would have probably said the exact same thing, and I guarentee I would have stuttered and stumbled over my answer too! It was unfair for Perez to ask a question that he was only going to accept if the answer matched his opinion. I love how he can express his views on the matter and she can’t. How is that fair? This question is a hot topic and did not belong in a beauty competition! Again leave it to our politicians! If I could, I would give miss California a high five! More people should not be afaid to share their points of view. I think Perez is just looking for drama and attention. I am embarrassed for him, if he doesn’t feel it himself!

  • t-weed says:

    ms california is gayyy!!!

    omg im so upzett!

  • chloe says:

    dumbass.

  • chloe says:

    This is for ANONYMOUS

    1. she stuttered. thats fine. everyone does sometimes. she’s human.
    2. ‘leave it to the politicians’ is an odd remark. We all know that politicians are fake, and try to please everyone, but you say it twice, so it sounds like you’re trying to sound smart. no one likes that.
    3. you’re right. she was honest.
    4. WE DON’T KNOW IF SHE DIDN’T !#%&%~`~%@&$()+( ING OFFEND ANYONE. She offended me. And obviously lots of others, otherwise no one would be posting this, and it wouldn’t be such a big deal.
    5. Perez picked his question based on what he believed, and obviously wanted to hear a certain answer. He knew that answer would affect the way he judged her, so it was completely fair. its his job to decide which girl is best according to his standards, and that question helped him decide.
    6. He can express his views on the matter because HE IS !#%&%~`~%@&$()+( ING GAY. He wouldn’t be offending people, because he is one of them. She is NOT. do.you.see.the.difference?
    7. a beauty competition is not only based on outer, but inner beauty, so that question was completely relevant. and if you didn’t take that into consolation, then you’re a dip *+$__+@#*^*@%@!` 8. ‘more people should not be afraid to share their points of view ‘ is horrible grammar. learn to write.

  • Manda says:

Yeah, you can be caught off guard with political questions, but they are trained to answer certain ways, to impress the judges. She should have just taken a breath and said her HONEST opinion. No matter what it was or how they felt. They are prepared for world peace questions, and not truth based questions. I am glad that Perez Hilton chose such a core question. These girls need to be examples of truth and need to be prepared for more honest questions. They may be the only examples little girls have! If that’s what she believed she should have come out with it, instead of subjecting the world to a horrible speech to sound trained and maintained. The speech made her sound ignorant, changes her opinion in mid-paragraph did not help her. I think in the end she got it out but for her to even say “No offense to anybody out there, but thats how I was raised and thats how I think it should be between a man and a woman. Thank you very much. lets you know that she is way to worried about how she looks, rather than her true opinions(which is what that whole portion of the contest is all about!!!). So what she felt that way? Just like gays, all races, and women all over the world expect equal rights and to not be constantly judged, so does she. We should respect her just like we all respect ourselves. She is no more wrong for her opinions than you are for yours. America prides ourselves on difference, but only out of convenience. We should be ashamed.

  • Sam says:

    Why was that embarrassing?

She answered the question according to her opinion.

  • downtownjulibrown says:

That’s what freedom of speech is all about!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Sarah says:

I dont understand why Paris is making a big deal. She has her own thoughts and opinoions and she shouldnt be punished for expressing it. And she did it in a very healthy manor. I think its so stupid that she didnt get the (&&#@(%__!+_*)# tle because of her answer. I find that very unfair. Paris needs to learn that everyone isnt going to think the same way as he does and they shouldnt be punished for it. Its like if someone told him he couldnt be on tv bc hes gay. Hes a hipricate

  • ally says:

She could of lied but she didnt, she knew paris was gay. I give her props Paris needs to get over himself!!!!!!!!!!!!!11

  • Debra Mack says:

She was asked a question and gave an answer. This was how she felt. She should not have been judged for her honest opinion.

  • taya says:

how the +(&__~+$`%+$&%@% did she embarrass herself
it was her +(&__~+$`%+$&%@% n opinion. no one has to suck
up to perez. although i disagree.

  • rose says:

She has her own beliefs. She also told those to “take no offense”. At least she was honest about it….It was her personal oppinion..This is a free country deal with it…There is nothing embarrassing about it…

  • maggie says:

i think its cool she isnt afraid to say what she thinks. it was an opinion question, which is what she gave. there was no right or wrong answerr

  • Lisa says:

Wow, are you people serious? She TOTALLY embarrassed herself, not because she came out against gay marriage (as most have said, she was asked to voice her opinion) but because her answer, while short, still manages to be rambling. Also, and most significantly, the premise that she bases her answer on is completely untrue. In America, people are NOT able to choose between one or the other, for the most part. If they were, then gay marriage would be a non-issue. Duh!! And how can you not laugh at the phrase “opposite marriage”? That is hilarious!

For the record, I don’t even see how people are still getting away with disallowing gay marriage. I am pretty sure that all the objections to it are based on religious beliefs, but our Constitution explicitly calls for the separation of church and state. And folks are married by and recognized as a single entity by THE STATE. Somehow, I think most gay folks would be ok with not being allowed to get married inside of a church building. So why should religious beliefs (and those of people who are in no way related to the two people getting married, at that) be allowed to interfere with the state recognizing two people as married? It’s ridiculous and illogical. But then, so is organized religion in general, so what more can one expect.

  • sholove101 says:

so you dont believe in god then?

  • marie says:

the bible says nothing about homosexuality being wrong. i think people today are pathetically uneducated, should maybe try reading the bible themselves, and not just listen to what the church tells them to believe. it’s ridicullous how so many people say that their religion is against homosexuality and that the bible talks out against gay people. it clearly does not and you will not find anything in the bible against gay people.

  • Libby says:

    1 Corinthians 6:9
Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

Leviticus 18:22 – “Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable.”

Romans 1:26-27 – “Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion.”

Clearly the Bible does mention homosexuality.

  • Jess005 says:

She did not embarrass herself..she gave her opinion…which i tought it was OKAY i mean, after all where did that “freedom of speech” thing go? hmm>? was it just a myth? :O NO WAY! LOl
she’s allowed to have her opinion by all means, i’m bisexual, but prefer women….and her answer did not offend me at all because it is her opinion. dont ask questions you dont want to hear the answer to……

  • abcdefg says:

I think everyone is entitled to their own opinion. There isn’t a right or wrong answer to the question, so why what makes it right for everyone to rip her apart for answering with her own opinion? Just because she is one of the FEW people left with a conservative opinion doesn’t mean she is “closed minded.” It is what she believes in. If America really wants to “change,” maybe we should just accept each other’s opinions. Yes, (to whoever wrote this blog), I know you think she is stupid and I understand that you think gay marriage is okay, but you didn’t have to be so mean about the way you critisized the poor woman. Was she supposed to lie about what she believes in so she can be socially accepted? Since everyone these days tried to be so “radical.”

  • Kelly says:

She doesn’t embarrass herself. She spoke from the heart. oh yea, and by the way…what has this Perez guy done to make himself famous? Write a blog and go to parties. WoW, then I should be famous also. He is a failed actor for goodness sakes. well I guess you are who you run with, Paris has done nothing to be famous either, except be born to the Hilton name. She is a blooming idiot. People go hungry, and are homeless, yet this psycho can spend 3500.00 a day to have someone else apply her freakin make-up, because she is either to stupid or to lazy to do it herself…..Pls
If I was a part of the Hilton family, I would be disgusted with the fact that some low life “Mario Armando Lavandeira” was getting famous from their surname…I would boycott that __~~~~()@_@!*~$* Oh and Perez’s website was called Pagesixsixsix.com…no wonder he believes in gay marriage…what has America become?

  • d says:

I think it was great she told what she believed in. As I always say god made man women not man an man if he wanted 2men together or 2women he would made same sex to beable to produce children. Everyone is entitled to there rights and beliefs. I dont think people should ask question as they had her ppl need to keep there personal life in the bed room not in public.

  • JuliannaTeresa says:

…And thats why she didn’t win.
That was the worst possible answer ever.

  • Val says:

Gays & lesbos deserve the right 2 be watevr they want 2 be,do watevr they want 2 do,
& marry whoevr they want 2 marry!

  • SB says:

oh yeah, opposite marriage as in…dating (the opposite of marriage). since half, give or take, of married heterosexual couples these days get divorced and remarried, and in some cases several times, then I guess one could really pair dating and marriage synonymously. the vows are, ” ’til death do you part.” that’s it, no exceptions, you are in for the long haul. so, my dear, carrie, it would appear as though you were raised to believe that marriage is just an extravagent version of dating. oh, and us homosexuals will just have to seek a speparate union. yes, one more truly binding. however, some gays aren’t really fond of the whole permanent thing, but in those cases, i’m sure a “marriage” would do just fine.
    cheers!

  • Mercedes Vaughan says:

I agree with her 100%. I to was raised to believe marriage should be between a man and a woman. I’m a christian woman, and the bible clearly states that a man and a woman should marry. It also says that if a man and man should “be together” that they will go to hell. Now im not judging anyone, as a matter of fact one of my bestfriends is gay, well bisexual. I accept it, but that doesn’t mean i agree with it. Everyone has their opinon, and this is mine. I don’t care if you like it or not.

Something to think about: If everyone in the world decided they wanted to be gay, that would be the end of the human population. I mean where would the babies come from?

  • Heather says:

Who f–ing cares…. I am straight and I believe that marriage should be open to anyone. I hate when people ridicule gay people, but had sex before they were married,or lie, or cheat, and that is just listing a few things. people should be allowed to live their lives anyway they want and not have to deal with dumb—es thinking they should express their opinions. I say if it doesn’t invovle you, shut the F.. up!

( I know I have some grammer and spelling issues in my post, but since this is not important, i felt i didn’t need to care)

“mouthing” others doesn’t make anyone look good. I don’t understand how hurting another person’s feelings is ever considered the right thing to do. Life is way too short to spend it worrying about useless crap.

  • Heather says:

For those of you that still feel like you absolutely have to say something or you’re whole world will fall apart then send me a message: http://www.myspace.com/erickakristine DO NOT ask for a friend invite because I will not accept it unless I know you.

  • Brandy says:

I feel everyone has a right to marry who they want either man or woman same sex or not ,who are we to judge someone else. Love is love.

  • Alysson says:

gahhh!!! y does she hate gay ppl? if u like them then they should be able 2 get married! even though she tried 2 make it sound nice, it was fake…

  • myesha says:

i hate you miss california and i mean that.

  • Samantha and David says:

the Question was “should every state fallow suit”. not “what was her opinion”, i do agree with her, the Bible says “Man and Woman”, NOT man and man or woman and woman. READ IT SOMETIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • megan says:

well perez did say WHY OR WHY NOT! so its her oppinion, get over it.

  • Jaylynn says:

Miss california shouldnt be embarrassed about her opinion on same sex marrige. were all uintiled to our own opinions. I believe love is love no matter who you aare but that dosnt mean im going to judge someone on their opinion. all of you people that think what miss california said is such a big deal need to put your self in her shoes she was asked her opinion on a subject and she answerd truthfully. gosh im 14 and i can see that whats wrong with you people?

  • not for you to know says:

    PREZE HILTON IS CRAZY DUMB+++

  • RYRY says:

    really??? this +_)~%`@#_#@*++&$* is stupid~

  • Kate says:

It is so sad that she can’t express her own opinion without people hating her. She obviously got a little flustered because the question was coming from someone who’s opinion was obvious. She should be very proud that she stood up for what she believes in instead of simply chickening out and agreeing with what she knew America wanted to hear.

  • turtle says:

What a dumb *+(_`$#&_~+`^%(#` If someone wants to love another with the same genitals. Let Them!

  • carolyn says:

im a proud lesbian but i do got to say ppl have rights 2 there own opions

  • amber says:

i don’t understand how she embarrassed herself. she stated he opinion clearly, and because she got nervous and called heterosexual marriage “opposite” marriage doesn’t make it right to ridicule her. she ACTUALLY has morals. i commend her for her honesty and conviction. especially when she received a question like that from an obviously very homosexual man.
    go, Miss California!

  • ian says:

    biased media as usual…

  • CARRIE P says:

I personally think that its ridiculous for people to bash her just for having an opinion. She didn’t embarass herself in anyway. Homosexuals want equality, but yet they will yell at anyone who wasn’t raised to support their lifestyle? That doesn’t sound equal. Perez asked what she thought of it, and now she embarassed herself because she didn’t lie and say the answer he wanted to hear? This is bull. Part of being a contreversy is living with the other opinion.
