It’s not the first time a topless coffee shop has opened (the pic above comes from Fort Lauderdale in 1985), but the Grand View Topless Coffee Shop is the first of it’s kind in Vassalboro, Maine. While some in the town of 4,000+ are outraged (“people move to these small towns because they don’t want to deal with bars and adult video stores and a topless coffee shop”), others think the town could use any financial boost it can get. In a Kennebec Journal article about Grand View, members of the co-ed half-naked waitstaff include former store managers, and allegedly 150 locals were interviewed for the 10 available positions. “It’s just a body part,” said one waitress. “There are more serious issues to worry about in this country than something like this.” Claims a resident, “the town of Vassalboro needs businesses, you know?”
Staff at the 18-and-over shop, which has a “look, but don’t touch or photograph” policy, work solely for tips. An estimated 50 to 60 people visited on Monday, and tips usually ranged from $5 to $20. We’d just feel a little awkward asking for milk.
