Christine Newton-John, 41, will receive up to five years in jail for the murder of her 71-year-old husband last June. A security tape at a Middlefield, Ohio pool showed Newton-John dragging husband James Mason in the water by his hands and legs, refusing to let him leave the pool a total of 43 times. “The man was exercised to death,” said police chief Joseph Stehlik.
Newton-John, known as John Vallandingham before a 1993 sex change operation, had known Mason since birth, but the pair only married three years ago. “Newton-John always said Mason was touched, a little slow,” said Stehlik. “Family members believed the marriage was not for sex but companionship. It almost appears that if Newton-John had said, ‘We’re getting married,’ Mason would have done it.” They were married in Kentucky, a state that allows one to change the gender on their birth certificate.
Police suspected Newton-John of abusing Mason before his murder, and family claimed that the elderly man was afraid to swim. Authorities let Newton-John cop to a lighter sentence because there was no audio on the surveillance tape, which might have caused difficulty for the prosecution in a murder trial.
