Jessika Baier’s Idol Smackdown Surprises Viewers

After weeks of being annoyed by questionable golden ticket winners, now American Idol critics are concerned about someone who lost. When Jessika Baier auditioned in Puerto Rico, Simon Cowell gave the veteran singing contest competitor one of his harshest verdicts yet, refusing to let her sing a second song or even hear constructive criticism from the other judges (“just go ‘yes’ or ‘no’!”).

That was absolutely awful, I mean, not only that, I just can’t believe that you won all these shows. This is ridiculous…I will never ask you to sing anything. The singing, the jumping up and down, none of its working…Jessika, I can swim, but I’m not going to win ten Olympic medals at the Olympic games!

While her take on Celine Dion‘s “I Surrender” was flawed, Simon’s offense at her very presence was pretty striking in contrast to his treatment of “Bikini GirlKatrina Darrell. Why was he so pissed off? Paula Abdul suggested Baier “take the constructive criticism” (Simon: “she won’t“), so did the editors only make it look like Simon refused to let them speak? If Baier plays up the sympathy, missing out on Idol may have been the best thing to happen to her career.

Check out a video of Baier singing “I Surrender” in full at another talent competition after the jump.

Should she have been given a second chance or was Simon telling her what she’s been needing to hear?

I thought she should have went to Hollywood. She has a beautiful voice and a very bubbly personality. I was SHOCKED when the “judges” were giving Jessika those looks and when Simon said all that mean stuff, my eyes swelled with tears. She definitely should have gotten a second chance to sing another song. I watched the audition over and over and I just don’t see or hear where Simon was coming from. Don’t give up Jessika!! Keep singing and do it again. Norman Gentle, if I have the name right, makes it and she doesn’t. What a joke. I also thought the guy who “needed” his guitar, should have went to Hollywood too. Sorry, I can’t remember his name.

I think she sounded lovely. And I honestly think American Idol is 100% fake. Unless, people have gone through the rounds they don’t understand all the cuts they take out of the audition process. I don’t even know Jessika Baier, but I can honestly say her voice is very pretty. On tv they made her come off as being kinda annoying and with too much self confidence. Many people root for the under dog and maybe that”s why she got cut. I don’t like it the way American Idol is coming across. Too many people are making it to Hollywood that have connections to the entertainment Industry. For once I would like to see someone with no training or connections. And American Idol just seems so fake. I mean I know they take the “very best and worst to Hollywood. But some of the people who made it to Hollywood still aren’t that impressive. It must be the awkwardly funny personalities that make it these days.. What about talent? Either way Jessika should just keep pushing after her dreams. American Idol is just one way.. There are a billion others

When I saw it, I stayed like, “whaaat?” I cant belive they did it! I mean, Celine Dion is a really hard song, and they just said she sucked! I got my chin on the floor, seriously

is she trying out again!?!?!?!?!?!?!?! She needs to be in the next season!!

  • Jessika Fan says:

Yes, she is trying out again now. She is now the talk show host on our city’s local radio show. Just because she didn’t make it on that season of AI, doesn’t mean she will make it this time. If not, she doesn’t need them at all. She was absolutely fantastic I thought.

She died this morning on her way to work at our local Jackson, Michigan FM radio station (K105.3FM). She was a wonderful woman. So much promise, such presence. Such a lovely young woman. Our thoughts and prayers go to her family.
