President elect Barack Obama ordered up a spamtastic treat while vacationing in Hawaii with wife Michelle and his two daughters. Midway through a round of golf yesterday, Barack popped into the clubhouse and ordered up two hot dogs, a Powerade, a Coke, and two Spam musubi, a sushi-like Hawaiian delicacy.
So what exactly is this Spamazing snack Mr. President Elect picked up? Spam musubi is a ridiculously simple creation composed of only four ingredients: Spam, rice, nori, and furikake. Japanese in Hawaii started making Spam musubi during World War II when fresh meat or fish was scarce, and it quickly became a hit. It is extremely popular in Hawaii today, and is available at almost every convenience store and is also commonly sold at school cafeterias.
