The G. Gordon Liddy Scanda-List

Who is he?

  • G. Gordon Liddy, conservative radio talk show host.
  • Liddy was a member of the White House Plumbers, a covert investigation unit under the Nixon Administration. He went to jail for four and a half years for co-masterminding a robbery of the DNC headquarters, in the Watergate Hotel. He also proposed firebombings, kidnapping anti-war protestors (to leave in Mexico during the Republican Convention) and staging photographs of Democratic politicians with prostitutes.

Why is everyone talking about him?

  • While discussing Senator Barack Obama’s relationship with Bill Ayers yesterday, David Letterman noted to his guest, Senator John McCain, that McCain had a similar “relationship” with Liddy, who held a fundraiser at his house for the Senator in 1998.

  • Last November, McCain appeared on Liddy’s talk show and claimed he was “proud” of the convicted felon. “It’s always a pleasure for me to come on your program, Gordon, and congratulations on your continued success and adherence to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great.”
  • While McCain told Letterman that Liddy had “served his time,” like Ayers, Liddy has expressed no remorse for his acts of terror. Liddy even claims that he was a “prisoner of war.”

G. Gordon Liddy Fun Facts!

  • In 1994 (after the Waco siege), Liddy came under fire for statements about the ATF, including “Now if the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms comes to disarm you and they are bearing arms, resist them with arms. Go for a head shot; they’re going to be wearing bulletproof vests…Head shots, head shots…Kill the sons of bitches.”
  • While working in the FBI in the late 1950s, his supervisor labeled him a “superklutz.”
  • The White House Plumbers were so named because they were responsible for stopping any “leaks” from the Nixon administration to the press.
  • Liddy appeared on Miami Vice twice, as “Capt. Real Estate.”
  • One of his books is named Fight Back! Tackling Terrorism, Liddy Style.
  • Liddy was actually sentenced to twenty years in prison, but President Jimmy Carter commuted the remainder of his sentence in 1977. Had he served the entire term, he would not have been released until 1993—and never would have been on Miami Vice.
