Robert Downey Jr. Made One Too Many Oscar Movies This Year

One of the big Oscar movies this year was supposed to The Soloist, in which a reporter, Robert Downey, Jr. (ooh!), meets a homeless (oooh!) violinist (oooh!) with mental problems (oooooh!), played by Jamie Foxx (*head explodes*). Now Paramount has announced that the movie will come out in March instead of November, making the film ineligible for the next Academy Awards.

Your first assumption might be “wow, the movie must suck!” Don’t be so sure. Downey has already gained a surprising number of acting accolades this year. Why surprising? Because he played an actor in blackface and a superhero. Instead of pushing The Soloist, Paramount is putting its Oscar dollars behind his hysterical supporting performance in Tropic Thunder. And if Johnny Depp can be nominated for Captain Jack, Downey’s Tony Stark (a.k.a. Iron Man) isn’t much of a stretch for Best Lead.

Tough luck, The Soloist. It looks like one year can only take so much RDJ. But if his performance really is that great, it won’t matter when the movie comes out.
