Brazilian soccer player Thiago Jotta Da Silva, 25, has died six days after being beaten, tortured and shot by three men who may have been hired by the athlete’s girlfriend. Da Silva had just finished talking to his girlfriend about their break-up when the three men (including one member of Brazillian secret police) handcuffed and physically assaulted him. He was shot three times while attempting to escape. His girlfriend, Alyne Padula, and her aunt, Marcia Padula Viana, were arrested for instigating the crime on Sunday, based on statements by Da Silva before his death.
Da Silva should not be mistaken for Thiago Emiliano Da Silva, 24, who played on Brazil’s National Team in the 2008 Summer Olympics. At the time of his death, Da Silva was a player for the second-division team Estacio de Sa Soccer Club.
